In-car PC launches in Saudi Arabia

The Microbus Computing System has been launched by security company Nurizon in Saudi Arabia. The system gives owners desktop PC power in their vehicles. It is designed to withstand the demands of harsh environments. Owners can use the Microbus PC to browse the internet, receive and send emails and control vehicle electronics and surveillance equipment from within the vehicle.

Mercedez Benz sales in ME hit record

Mercedes-Benz Cars Middle East and Levant sold 1,872 vehicles in September, up 24 per cent over the same period in 2007 and an all-time record month for the Dubai-headquartered company. Sales across the region for the first nine months of the year total 14,856, a rise of over 21% over the same period last year, according to a press statement.

Phantom Coupe debuts in Middle East

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars in Abu Dhabi is now offering the Phantom Coupe for the first time in the Middle East. Priced at Dhs2.6m ($708,000), the Phantom Coupe boasts a 6.75 litre V12 engine that produces 453 bhp and 720 Nm of torque. With the introduction of Phantom Coupe, the line-up of Rolls-Royce now consists of four models.

Drivers fined Dhs500 for road crashes

Abu Dhabi has given the private firm employed to clear up minor traffic accidents the power to charge the driver at fault Dhs500. From October 12, the company, Saaed, will charge motorists in accidents where there is no injured party. The announcement was made by Major Hussein al Harthi, head of the traffic engineering and road safety department at Abu Dhabi Police and chairman of the board of Saaed.

Tata buys one-third stake in Piaggio Aero

India's Tata has agreed to buy a one-third share of Italy's Piaggio Aero Industries, manufacturer of the Avanti II turboprop twin. The proposed investment by Tata, which is expected to receive regulatory and other approvals later this week, includes the purchase of existing shares from current shareholders and a new share offering. The Ferrari and Di Mase families and the Mubadala Development Co of Abu Dhabi, the current primary shareholders of Piaggio, will also hold about one third each of the Italian company when the deal is finalized.

Dodge in new Dubai football league

Trading Enterprises has announced a sponsorship agreement with E-Sports, launching a country-wide grass roots tournament called the Dodge Junior Football League to be held in Dubai. New Volkswagen Passat CC to debut in November

The new Volkswagen Passat CC will mark its debut in the Middle East in November 2008, according to Volkswagen Middle East. The company says the new Passat CC represents a brand new segment in the automobile industry combining the rationality of a saloon and the emotional appeal of a sports coupé. The Passat CC will come to the Middle East with two TSI engines. The first one is a 1.8 litre engine with a power output of 118 kW / 160 hp (at 5,000 rpm). The other is a 2.0 litre with a power output of 147 kW / 200 hp (at 5,100 rpm).

NCR offers car rentals by the hour

National Car Rental in the UAE has expanded its product portfolio to include vehicle use for shorter durations instead of the market standard of a minimum 24-hour hire period. The 'Day Use Rate' scheme allows customers to use their vehicle of choice from one to 10 hours. NCR's UAE fleet currently stands at more than 4,000 vehicles and it plans to open many more outlets at strategic locations in Dubai, as well as in other emirates across the country by 2009.

Al Tayer Motors marks 25th year

UAE automobile dealership Al Tayer Motors, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, has reported that it has achieved 100-fold growth since its inception. The company, which represents leading American and European automotive brands in the UAE, commenced operations with the signing of its first dealership agreement with Land Rover and Rover in 1983. Al Tayer is planning major network expansion with many more showrooms, body shops and after-sales centres in various locations including Mussaffah in Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah over the next two years, in addition to its existing facilities, according to a press statement.
