Saudi to set up first car plant
- Saudi Arabia, one of the world's largest auto markets, plans to establish its first car manufacturing plant in the eastern city of Dammam, reported The Hindu. The Saudi Authority for Industrial Cities and Technological Regions (SACTR) has reached an agreement with the Gulf Automobile Manufacturing Company to set up the plant with a capital of SR 375m. The factory will have a capacity of 15,000 cars which will increase to 300,000 when it is shifted to a new facility in Sudair.

Luxury car show attracts Saudi women
- Although banned from driving, large numbers of women flocked to the third luxury car exhibition which opened in Jeddah on Feb.3. A range of the world's luxury cars were exhibited in this three-day event. Reports are saying that more than 1,500 luxury cars worth more than 4bn Saudi riyals are sold in Saudi Arabia every year. The Al Watan newspaper reported that women were seen everywhere in the exhibition halls checking out the latest models of luxury cars.

Mercedes reports record January sales
- Mercedes Car Group Middle East and Levant have reported its best January on record with deliveries of 1,610 new vehicles, an increase of 32% over the same month in 2007. January sales were helped by the Mercedes-Benz flagship S-Class which rose to 614 from 541 units, and the C-Class, which saw its sales rise to 345 from 104, an increase of 232%.

Mercedes to unveil sportier roadster
- Mercedes-Benz plans to launch the new-generation of the world's most successful premium roadster, the SL-Class in the Middle East in April, the company has announced. The roadster features a new design that emphasizes sportiness and effortless driving. The new SL range will offer two six-cylinder models starting with the new entry-level SL 280 (231 hp) and the SL 350 as well as the SL 500 with a V8 engine and the top-of-the-range SL 600 with a V12 powerplant.

Honda sales up by 32% in Qatar
- Doha Marketing Services Company (Domasco), Honda's official distributor in Qatar, has achieved 32% growth in car sales and 29% in motorcycles in 2007, reported Gulf Times. This growth has been attributed to the buoyant market in Qatar as well as an increase in market share for Honda in both the segments, the company said. Sales of Honda Power Products went up by 19% in 2007 mainly due to strong generator segment, he said, adding Domasco Leasing also found new customers because of Honda's technology and reliability and backed up its customer service.

- Bad bets on subprime mortgages might have blown mansion-sized holes in the balance sheets of some big banks, but bankers are not scaling back their plans for splurging this bonus season, reported Reuters. Lavish vacations in Dubai, a $265,000 sports car and $20,000 bottles of Scotch whisky top their wish list in the magazine's annual reader survey.

BMW Alpina up by 23% in GCC
- BMW Alpina automobiles announced a 23% sales growth in the GCC in 2007. Leading the growth has been the BMW Alpina B6, ahead of last year's leader the BMW Alpina B7. BMW Alpina business has sold over 1,500 units worldwide in 2007.

VW sales climb in Mideast in 2007
- The Volkswagen Group delivered over 9000 vehicles to customers throughout the Middle East in 2007, a double digit sales increase compared to 2006. The Touareg was the most popular Volkswagen car in the region, representing 28% of the car maker's total sales for 2007, followed by the Passat which contributed to 27% of total sales and then the Jetta which accounted for 23%.
