  • The boom in the commodity market continues. Last week, on the back on a weakening US dollar, oil, silver and gold prices hit record highs. Gold hit even a level of $1000 per troy ounce and oil (WTI) reached $110 per barrel.

  • US treasuries safe haven as recession looms?

  • The ‘buzz-word’ dominating the financial markets is ‘recession’. Investors fear that the US economy will fall into a recession, which is not unlikely. The housing market, particularly in the US, is still slumping. The credit crunch still persists and economic data is weak. Recently, the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia general economic index dropped to the lowest level in seven years. And even the leading indicators showed a dramatic decline for a fourth straight month.

  • Gold heading for a fall?

  • Nowadays, precious metals and other commodities are dominating press reports. Not surprising, with commodities hovering near multiyear highs. Gold has had its best start to a year since 1980, as stock markets plunged and investors bought the metal to diversify their holdings.

  • Crude oil futures (West Texas Intermediate) is up around 82 per cent from a year ago and February delivery contracts reached a record high of $100.09 a barrel on January 3. From that top, WTI retreated towards a current level of $94.

  • Yen-carry trade: Game over?

  • This coming year the euro could strengthen against the Japanese yen. The present low Japanese interest rate of 0.5%, combined with a higher European interest rate of 4%, has fuelled demand for euros. Of course the yen has also weakened against other ‘high interest’ countries like Australia, New Zealand and the US.
