The Dubai Bone and Joint Centre will shortly move to a new 100-bed speciality hospital from level 50 of the Emirates Towers. The new facility will have eight operating rooms, two minimal invasive day procedure rooms and rehabilitation units with surgeons from North America and Europe.

A new US study has identified a link between emotions and heart disease with angry, hostile and depressed people more prone to this ailment. Those tested showed an increased level of C-reactive protein in their blood which raised the risk of heart disease.

Iraq has seen an alarming rise in cancer cases and birth deformities due to the use of depleted uranium weapons by the US coalition forces, Muthanna Al Hanooti, director of the largest Arab-American charity organisation told Gulf News. He said there has to be a thorough study of these cases, everybody knows somebody with cancer.
A Filipino expatriate in Ras Al Khaimah was admitted to the Saqr Hospital after suffering a brain haemorrhage in a heated business argument and died, reported Gulf News. His colleagues at a local supermarket over heard him arguing on his mobile phone with a supplier and then he collapsed.

The Bahrain Medical Society has called on the government to implement as soon as possible a recently approved scheme for compulsory health insurance for expatriates, reported Gulf News. The new scheme will save the health sector around 40 per cent of its annual budget.
The UAE Ministry of Health is planning publication of the Emirates Health Directory, a comprehensive reference database of all public and private sector organizations and companies. The directory will also act as a promotional tool for medical products and services in the UAE as well as across the GCC.

The UAE is in need of more facilities to treat cancer sufferers, Dubai Hospital's Dr. Housnia Gergash told Gulf News following a two-day conference on gynaecological cancer. She said we need at least four cancer centres in the UAE and Dubai needs two alone to cope with the increase in population.

A new diabetic clinic will open at the Kuwaiti Medical Centre in Ras Al Khaimah on October 3 with the capacity to serve around 500 patients in the area, reported Gulf News. Patients will be registered on a computer and then phoned to remind them of their appointments.

Around 500 people die from cancer a year in the UAE each year, according to the Ministry of Health with breast cancer the most common among women at 37.5 per cent while for men lymphoma claimed 17.2 per cent. A study showed that Arabs represented 39.4 per cent of those seeking treatment for cancer in the UAE and nationals 23.3 per cent.

Oman has launched a major research project into diabetes among Omanis, the Amal Study. Phase one will identify a group in pre-diabetic state from a target population in the 18 and over age group. The second phase will assess insulin resistance and the presence of the disease and complications.
The Clemenceau Medical Center, an affiliate of the famous Johns Hopkins International hospital group, will open in Beirut by the end of the year. The affiliation encompasses different aspects of health care delivery such as the creation of clinical programs, human resources management, quality and utilization management, staff training and continuing education and telemedicine.
More than six per cent of school children in the UAE have health problems, according to a survey released by the Ministry of Health. The most common disorders are sight-related with roughly equal levels for girls and boys, with other conditions including spinal disorders, bladder problems and asthma.
