UAE heart health awareness

The international World Heart Day on September 26 will be marked by a series of activities in the UAE. This year the theme is the education of children and adolescents to prevent and control heart disease. There will be a series of lectures and a media campaign to raise awareness.

UAE to permit organ transplants

A long-awaited law allowing organ transplants is now awaiting UAE Cabinet approval, officials told Gulf News. They said plans to equip some hospitals to carry out the transplants were also in progress. Presently patients in the UAE have to travel abroad for transplants.

RAK, new gynaecology ward

The public hospital in Al Munaei, a remote village in Ras Al Khaimah, is to get a new obstetrics and gynaecology ward which will eliminate the need for patients to travel for treatment, reported Gulf News. The USD1.5m ward will have a surgical operating theatre and 15 beds.

Doctor in death dispute quits

The gynaecologist at the centre of a dispute over the death of a national woman and her unborn baby will not be allowed to resign because the case is still under investigation, officials told Gulf News. A second committee will now sit to determine responsibility for the deaths at the Al Qasimi Hospital in Sharjah.

Complementary medicine, Dubai show

KSA, 150 new health centres

The Saudi Arabian Ministry of Health is planning to build 2,000 health centres in the future, Dr. Mohammad Ba-Sulaiman, supervisor general of health centres told Arab News. He said a contract for the construction of 150 health centres had been awarded to Saudi Oger.

Robo-surgeon pioneers in Riyadh

Surgeons at King Khaled University Hospital, part of the King Saud University in Riyadh, operated roboticallly on 13-year-old Saudi girl Sheikha Al-Ajazi to correct obesity, reported Arab News. Three gangly arms slowly descended, penetrating the abdomen of the girl, whose weight exceeded 102 kg. This life-saving operation was the first of its kind in the world on a child.

Surgical cure for hypertension

Doctors at Welcare Hospital in Dubai have successfully operated on a 51 year old man suffering from hypertension, reported Gulf News. After the removal of a growth on the top of his left kidney he is back to normal and does not need to take medicine any longer.

USD50m Muscat drug plant opens

The Oman Pharmaceutical Products Company's new USD50m plat has started operations in Muscat and expects to begin exports to the GCC. It has a capacity to produce 900m tablets and 300m capsules a year for illnesses from diabetes to cardio vascular diseases, reported Gulf News.

RAK schools ban candy

School canteens in Ras Al Khaimah have banned the sale of candy in a drive for more healthy eating and less tooth decay, reported Gulf News. School managers in RAK discovered that some catering companies were selling candies which are not part of the contracted services.

KSA, 130 robo-surgeons to meet

More than 130 international and Saudi surgeons are to meet in Riyadh from September 20-22 to discuss endoscopic and robotic surgery. There will be 20 televised operations that will be viewed from as far away as Canada, France and Italy. Around 100 papers will be presented.

AD, more free heart surgery

Abu Dhabi's Mafraq Hospital is to be further equipped to conduct more open-heart surgery which is almost free at the hospital, reported Gulf News. Last year the hospital performed 350 operations, all of them successful. Around 40 per cent were on UAE nationals.

Self-medication warning

Buying medicine without a perscription can be dangerous, Dr Juma Bilal told Gulf News. He said that an increasing number of cases involved medical complications from the use of non-prescribed drugs. Mothers should be particularly careful with their children, he added.

AD surgeons save fish bone victim

Surgeons at Abu Dhabi's Al Mafraq Hospital have saved the life of a Bangladeshi man who suffered a scratched artery in his throat caused by a tiny fish bone, reported Gulf News. His throat had become inflamated after two months without treatment and surgeons gave him a 20 per cent chance of survival.
