A UAE survey conducted by Hoffmann-La Roche revealed that over 70 per cent of a random sample of 303 people considered themselves overweight. Over 50 per cent agreed that the most negative impact of being overweight is the detrimental effect it has on health, wellness and energy.

The UAE Red Crescent Authority is to launch a nine-day meidcal campaign to sponsor 35 open-heart operations in Yemen. Officials told a press conference yesterday that medical professionals from the Italian health authortites will take part at the Al Thurna Hospital in Sanaa from September 10-18.
The UAE health authorities are to investigate the death of a pregnant woman admitted to hospital in Sharjah after a traffic accident last Saturday, reported Gulf News. The 32-year old UAE national lady was allegedly refused delivery even after being referred to a gynaecologist by the emergency doctor, and died of her internal injuries.

UAE officials have defended the pricing of medicines and drugs in the UAE as fair, reported Gulf News. Dr Eisa bin Jakka Al Mansouri, Director of the Drug Control Department, said that people might find some medicines cheaper elsewhere and vice-versa. It all depends on the cost of running a pharmacy in the country, he added.

The new USD1.3m Shifa Al Jazeera Medical Centre private hospital in Bahrain has officially opened. Since a soft launch on June 10 this year the hospital has attended to more than 25,000 patients. The multi-speciality hospital is open 24 hours a day as a specialised centre for outpatients.
Dubai's Belhoul Speciality Hospital has launched an awareness campaign. The hospital has a wide range of services from cardiology to neurosurgery, orthopaedics and plastic surgery. There is also the Belhoul European Hospital located on Dubai's Al Diyafa Street.
Children's lunch boxes should be carefully monitored for too much fat, sugar or salt, according to the UK's Food Standards Agency. It advised that fruit and vegetables, fish and bread or rice should be included, but did not suggest how this diet was to be enforced on children who prefer crisps, chocolate and soft drinks.

He is a specialist in gastric banding for obesity, and obtained his surgical specialization in Ghent, Belgium in 1996. He is a member of the Surgical Department at Jan Portaels Hospital in Belgium where he performs 10 gastric banding procedures per week.

Surgeons in Abu Dhabi are preparing to separate Sudanese twin boys who share the same genitals, reported Gulf News. The rare operation is scheduled for next months and both boys are in excellent health. Their final gender will be determined on the operating table but the aim is for two boys.

Bahrain's Health Ministry has unveiled a new programme to promote healthy living among school children. The programme will begin when the new school term starts in September. The programme, developed with the World Health Organisation, will target psychological as well as physical wellbeing.
