Siamese twins, delicate operation

Surgeons at Dubai's Al Mafraq Hospital said they would only determine the gender of siamese twins conjoined at the buttocks during an operation to separate them, reported Gulf News. The 19-month old twins from Sudan are in good shape but share reproductive organs, and now face a 20-hour operation.

Cholesterol drug safe for kids

Statin drugs can safely reduce cholesterol levels and reverse narrowing of the arteries in children with inherited high cholesterol, a two-year Dutch study has revealed. About one in 500 children worldwide has familial hypercholesterolemia. Cholesterol levels fell by 24 per cent in children who were given pravastatin with no serious side effects.

UAE check-up for ex-hostage

The released Filipino hostage Angelo de la Cruz will fly from Baghdad to Abu Dhabi for a medical check-up, according to Gulf News. The truck driver was held hostage in Iraq for two weeks pending a promise by Manila to withdraw its troops from the country which was done yesterday.

Blood bank, 30pc more donors

The UAE's Kalba Hospital has reported a 30 per cent rise in the number of blood donors due to an awareness campaign. At least six people a day are donating blood at the hospital which established its blood bank in March 2002, reported Gulf News.

Bahrain, USD80m new hospital

Work on the new USD80m King Hamad General Hospital in Bahrain's Muharraq island is to start in October. Dubai malpractice investigation

Officials at the Dubai Hospital are investigating alleged malpractice that led to the death of a 65-year-old woman from kidney failure, reported Gulf News. The woman died after a catheter was inserted into her chest for dialysis after difficulty using her veins. A permission slip was signed but the relations were not told of the risk, it is claimed.

Measures been taken to retain nurses in the UAE are having an effect, reported Gulf News. But the exodus of expatriate nurses to the West continues due to the high salaries on offer. Salaries for experienced nurses in the UAE range from USD700 to USD1,100 a month, although the cost of living in the West is substantially higher.

TB, 20 cases a month in Dubai

Around 20 new cases of tuberculosis are being reported in Dubai each month, reported Gulf News. Doctors said the unhygenic living conditions of construction workers was the main cause. The Al Maktoum hospital in Dubai has a special treatment facility for TB which requires months of medication.

UN chief warns on AIDS

UN Secretary General Kofi Annan yesterday opened the world's largest AIDS conference in Bangkok with a warning that Asia may face an AIDS crisis similar to sub-Saharan Africa if the region fails to act. He said this crisis threatened to undo decades of economic progress. Most GCC countries have a strict screening policy for residents.
