Saudi extends health insurance

Saudi Arabia's insurance market will get a boost in February when the government applies cooperative health insurance schemes to Saudis working in the private sector as well as to expatriate workers, reported Arab News. The scheme was approved in 1999 and will be applied to Saudis within three to five years.

To mark World Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Day, experts have adopted a new approach to tackle the dangerously low rates of diagnosis in COPD. Currently it is estimated that up to 50 per cent of people with the disease in the UAE are undiagnosed. COPD is a devastating lung disease exacerbated by smoking that progressively robs a person of the ability to breathe.

UAE medical professionals will be insured against malpractice from next month, Ministry of Health officials told Gulf News. Once this law is finalised such cases will be clear and easy to deal with, they said, adding that this law is expected to be ready within two months.

Dubai, new heart-attack care

Dubai's Rashid Hospital will have new life-saving technology for heart-attack victims from next month. The Lifenet Receiving System installed at the accident and emergency unit will be the first of its kind in the UAE, reported Gulf News. Herbal medicines, cancer warning

Herbal medicines are operating outside the law, the head of the UAE Drugs Control Department Dr Easa bin Jakaa Al Mansouri told Gulf News. The use of herbal remedies is a growing concern worldwide, he said, and should be controlled. The main problem is that herbal medicine may be linked to chronic poisoning which could cause cancer, he added.

UAE RCA, mission to Fallujah

President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan has ordered the UAE Red Crescent Authority to send two planes carrying 90 tonnes of food as urgent relief for the people of Fallujah in Iraq, reported Wam. A convoy of trucks carring relief to the city will also be sent by road.
