UAE pharmacy costs surge

The price of non-prescription medicines is rocketing in the UAE, reported Gulf News. One popular multivitimin product Centrum is up from Dhs47.50 to Dhs75 for 100 tablets. Pharmacists blame the rising euro for some price increases, locally produced medicines remain more competitive.

Eczema hits 20pc of UAE kids

Some 20 per cent of children between six and 18 in the UAE suffer from eczema, and the first support group for parents has been started in Dubai by the Dubai Ladies Club, American Hospital, Welcare Hospital and Novartis. Doctors said allergic reactions and genetics explained the disease which is increasing in the region.

Arab Health 2005, Feb 12-15

Arab Health 2005, the region's leading medical exhibition and conference, will be held in the Dubai International Exhibition Centre from February 12 to 15 with more than 2,000 companies from 50 countries attending. DHCC forms quality body

The Dubai Healthcare City and Harvard Medical International have formed a Centre for Healthcare Planning and Quality. The CPQ will oversee healthcare quality management, licensing, medical education and clinical planning within the DHCC, said officials.

AD doctors free conjoined twins

Surgeons in Abu Dhabi's Al Mafraq Hospital have separated conjoined twins in a 16-hour operation, reported Gulf News. The two year-old twins were joined at the buttocks and spinal cord. Doctors said it was one of the rarest cases in medical history.

Health tips for Ramadan

Muslims fasting during Ramadan should avoid stuffing themselves with food at night, or they may end up in the hospital emergency ward with a distended stomach, health officials told Gulf News. Doctors advised people to avoid fried foods and eat dates after breaking their fast.

Dubai, quit smoking roadshow

Nicotinell, a maker of stop-smoking kits, is to undertake a roadshow during Ramadan in Dubai. The move comes as the Dubai Municipality enforces a ban on smoking in shopping malls from tomorrow. The roadshow will focus on the health impact of smoking which results in more premature deaths than any other bad habit.

Qatar, US healthcare agreement

The Hamad Medical Corporation, Weill Cornell Medical College and New York-Presbyterian Hospital yesterday signed an agreement to advance medical education, clinical care and research in Qatar, reported The Peninsula. HMC will make its hospitals and primary health care centres available as clinical education training sites for WCMC-Q students.

Passive smoking, health hazard

Passive smoking is a health hazard, officials told Gulf News. Dubai is preparing to ban smoking in its shopping malls from Friday, expected to be the start of the Holy Month of Ramadan. Local Order No 11 of 2003 gives the municipality powers to ban smoking in public places and impose fines.

UAE, malpractice insurance

UAE Health Ministry medical staff are now all insured against malpractive lawsuits, reported Gulf News. Some 4,000 doctors, nurses and technicians are covered under an agreement signed with the Abu Dhabi National Insurance Company. Before this agreement medical staff had no cover.

Kuwait set to freeze embryos

Chief of In Vitro Fertilization Centre at Sabah Hospital in Kuwait, Dr. Hazem Al-Rumaih revealed plans to freeze embryos and sperms in order to be used for sterility treatment in Kuwait. Pregnancy rate in Kuwait rose to 35 per cent last year while global percentage is 25 per cent.

Oman, death certification

Oman has introduced a national system for the registration of deaths and cause-of-death reporting. World Heath Organisation officials praised the new initiative which will enhance the knowledge of the immediate causes of death among the population.
