Oman has a vibrant healthcare sector, with the number of private general clinics growing to 154 in 2004 from 102 in 2000, Minister of Health Dr Ali bin Mohammed bin Moosa told the Oman Daily Observer. He said that despite the country having an excellent public healthcare system, the private sector has survived and grown in Oman.
Saudi's Ministry of Health officials have advised patients suffering from chronic diseases to observe fasting during Ramadan only on medical advice. Patients who suffer from acute diabetes and hypertension should also regulate their intake of medicines only after consultation with their doctor, consultant physician Dr Fayssal Farahat told Arab News.

A survey conducted by Braun in the UAE and Saudi Arabia has identified smoking, obesity and certain age demographics to be major contributing factors to high blood pressure. The study found that individuals between 46 and 55 years of age are at the greatest risk of having high blood pressure, and men are more likely to have the condition than women.

Doctors and nurses from the Salamaniya Medical Complex in Bahrain are organising a national campaign to educate about the potentially crippling foot problems that can be brought on by diabetes. The programme will start on 14 November, which is World Diabetes Day.
Ajman University of Science and Technology has opened the Diabetes Care Centre at the Al Jurf campus, to treat and educate the local population about the disease that affects over 25% of UAE nationals. The centre is affiliated with the Diabetes Care Centre in Karlsburg, Germany, which helped the university develop the centre.

The UAE Ministry of Health says it will not attest sick leave requests for more than seven days that have not been signed by a specialist and stamped by the hospital or medical institution, reported Gulf News. Requests for leave from three to five days can be signed by a general practitioner.

More than 1,500 labourers gathered at the free medical camp in the Mezyad district of Al Ain, reported Gulf News. The camp was organised by the Association of Kerala Medical Graduates who brought 25 doctors and 30 nurses. Labourers complained that they could not afford treatment in the UAE.

The Dubai Court of First Instance has jailed a Lebanese doctor who performed abortions illegally at his clinic for one year. His two nurses, a secretary and assistant nurse received similar sentences and will be deported. Around 50 abortions were performed.

Authorities seized a shipment containing up to 13,000 ampoules of a controlled drug, said to be a derivative of morphine, reported Gulf News. The drugs came from India, and were falsely described on the manifest as motor spare parts. An Indian resident has been arrested over the seizure.
