Harvard chooses UAE woman

Leading UAE national woman educator Dr. Muhadditha Yahya Al Hashimi has been appointed education director of the Harvard Medical School, Dubai Centre. She is to develop post-graduate and continuing medical programmes and developed the first atlas of cancer mortality in the UAE as a part of her doctoral dissertation, reported Gulf News.

Vegetarians more healthy

Belhoul Speciality Hospital Nutrition Specialist Alice Mohan said that contrary to popular belief that a vegetarian diet is unhealthy because of a lack of vital nutrients and minerals, vegetarians are healthier than those who eat meat. She said vegetarians are less likely to suffer serious illnesses like cancer, heart disease and high blood pressure.

J&J cancer ward opens

AD to phase out health cards

Dubai Municipality officials have hit back at recent criticisms that the city is not ready to defend itself against Asian bird flu, reported Gulf News. NBB Health Centre opens Dec

The NBB Health Centre At Dair project is nearing completion. National Bank of Bahrain officials will inaugurate the new centre along with other dignitaries from the Ministry of Health in December 2005, during the Kingdom's National Day celebrations. Construction started in 2003 and will have cost almost $2m. The centre will have an X-ray section, a pharmacy and a laboratory as well as a diagnostic and treatment facilities.

UAE falls short on bird flu

The UAE Environment Agency has warned that the lack of quarantine facilities in the UAE could lead to an outbreak of bird flu, reported Gulf News. Officials said the only major facility in Ghuweifat is inadequate. Bird flu is a serious health hazard in South East and Central Asia.

AD, compulsory health insurance

Abu Dhabi has issued a decree making it compulsory for employers in the emirate to provide private health insurance for staff. The employee, his wife and three children under 18 must be covered, and residence visas will only be issued after insurance is paid-up.
