BurJuman walk fights breast cancer

The BurJuman Centre is holding a walkathon around Dubai Creek in November as part of its breast cancer awareness campaign which it started seven years ago, called 'Safe and Sound'. The aim of the campaign is to raise funds and promote awareness about the benefits of self-examination in detecting breast cancer in its early stages.

Zayed Foundation, $1.8m aid

The Zayed Foundation for Charitable and Humanitarian Works has entered into an agreement with the UAE Red Crescent Authority to set up charity projects worth $1.8m for tsunami victims in Indonesia and Sri Lanka. Two orphanages and health centres will be set up in Indonesia, and an orphanage and 20 residential units in Sri Lanka.

AD goes on blood drive

The Abu Dhabi Blood Bank has opened a blood donation drive to help lift supplies to government and private hospitals. The General Authority for Health Services for AD says the nation's blood supplies can be adequately maintained by eligible donors giving blood twice a year.

Illegal Russian birds, health risk

The importation ban on birds from Russia and some Asian countries to protect against avian flu has opened up an illegal trade in the UAE, with some birds coming into Sharjah on dhows, traders in the bird market told Gulf News. But no cases of bird flu have so far been detected in the UAE, and Dubai Municipality has increased inspections by 30%.

Unicef urges more breastfeeding

Unicef says there is a need to educate Saudi mothers about the benefits of breastfeeding. Only 31 percent of infants in the Kingdom are breastfed for the first six months. Unicef's Dr Mahendra Sheth says that several Gulf countries show patterns similar to European industrialised countries where exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months is below 35 percent.

Bharain takes cholera precautions

Bahrain is on cholera alert following an outbreak in Iran, reported Gulf Daily News. Doctors have been ordered to screen patients returning from Iran for symptoms of the potentially deadly disease. Imports of certain foods and drinks from Iran have also been suspended.

Heatstroke, heart attack link

A UAE-based doctor concluded that heart attacks suffered by two labourers, who survived, were brought upon by heatstroke. Ahalya Hospital cardiologist Dr Rajeev Gupta said he believed it is the first time an official medical report in the UAE has included a reference to the connection, according to a report in 7Days. The finding could alter the way work-related deaths and injuries are recorded in the future.

Al Ain medical centre push

The Abu Dhabi General Authority for Health has opened a modern healthcare centre in the Al Naema district of Al Ain, the first of 18 centres planned for the region. The centre will have a professional staff of six doctors offering specialist and general medical treatment.

The UAE Ministry of Health and Emirates Society for Consumer Protection are planning to increase nutritional information on food labels to increase awareness about food contents and combat obesity, reported Gulf News. The ministry is calling for public feedback on the proposed move.

Russian birds banned

The UAE has banned the import of live birds from Russia for fear of spreading bird flu in the country, reported Gulf News. A Ministry of Agriculture official said the ban would remain until Russia is cleared of avian influenza.

Meditech 2005, tele-medicine focus

The Meditech 2005 exhibition in Cairo will demonstrate the latest in tele-medicine technology, that allows access to remote medical expertise via communication links using satellites. The exhibition will also bring to the region leading manufacturers of medical technology and instruments. It runs from 22-25 September at the Cairo International Fairground.

New medical centre for Muscat

Apollo Medical Centre, specialising in gynaecology paediatrics and cardiology, is set to open in Muscat. The centre will have use of the only sonographic machine in Oman and employ 13 specialist doctors. The centre will also have orthopaedic and neurology departments and a casualty section.

EEG gets UN accreditation

Dubai-based Emirates Environmental Group has been awarded accreditation by the United Nations Environment Programme for supporting sustainable development initiatives. The organisation says it will be targetting issues in green architecture, sustainable development, conservation of resources and environmental education in the region.

Exercise beats diabetes

Women who exercise when young are less likely to develop diabetes when they fall pregnant, according to research by UAE endocrinologist and founder of the National Diabetes Control Committee, Dr Fatma Al Marashi. The condition affects more than 20% of pregnant women in the UAE. Dr Fatma says women between the ages of 18 and 22 who exercise daily have a decreased risk of developing gestational diabetes.

Health industry boosts insurance

The value of the health industry in Saudi is expected to be valued at $1.7bn by 2009, which will lead to a substantial increase in the size of the insurance market in the Kingdom, according to NCCI Executive Manager Ali Al Sabheen. He said SAMA announced that 14 insurance companies would soon get permits and a further 8 companies have also applied.
