Cancer examined in Bahrain

Endometrial cancer, which originates in the inner lining of the uterus, is increasing in Bahrain due to higher rates of obesity, diabetes and hypertension, according to Salmaniya Medical Complex Professor Abdulla Ali Isa. More than 100 GCC physicians are discussing trends in gynaecological pathology and acute leukaemia at the Bahrain Association of Pathologists Symposium in Manama.

UAE to move on Aids

The UAE has around 500 Aids patients currently undergoing treatment for the disease in the country, with about 95% of cases being unmarried males, according to a recent report in Emirates Today. A ministerial cabinet committee has reportedly been set up to formulate a plan to tackle the disease.

Exercise programme for schools

Right to Play, an NGO dedicated to developing sport and play for school children as part of a healthy education, will run a pilot physical education intiative in Duabi schools on behalf of the Dubai Education District. Health experts say physical activity and healthy eating at an early age are vital in preventing the onset of disease later on in life.

Smoke-free environment push

The UAE, Saudi Arabia, Oman and Qatar are among 79 signatories to the WHO Framework on Convention on Tobacco Control, reported Gulf News. The protocol is designed to promote smoke-free public areas, and includes bans on tobacco promotions and a tax and price increases on tobacco products. The deadline for compliance is February 2006.

IEG, clean up the world campaign

The International Environmental Group and Dulsco Waste Management held clean-up campaign in a section of desert in Nad Al Sheba, Dubai, as part of a drive to promote environmental awareness in the region. The event was supported by Dubai Municipality, Sharjah Public School, Unilever, Tiffany, Gulf Foods, German Imaging Technologies Dubai, and Le Royal Meridien Beach Resort and Spa.

Care of coast needed

Speakers at ArabianCoast 2005 have called for developers to pay more attention to the seashore and coastal areas while undertaking development projects. Current procedures in managing the marine and coastal environment are complex, and a unified law is needed, Secretary General of the Environment Agency in Abu Dhabi said in his opening address.

Nestle, infant milk safe

Swiss food giant Nestle has issued a statement reassuring consumers in the Middle East that its infant milk products are safe. The statement follows fears in Europe that container ink might contaminate infant milk, but such packaging is not used in the Middle East.

$545,000 malpractice lawsuit

The regional manager of a satellite TV company has filed a $545,000 malpractice law suit against a private hospital in Dubai for 50% permanent disability to his ankle, reported Gulf News. After physiotherapy his misdiagnosed sprained ankle allegedly turned out to have multiple fractures.

GCC bird flu plan

The GCC ministers of health and agriculture are drawing up an action plan to keep bird flu out of the region, reported Gulf News. The ministers agreed to ban imports of poultry, hatching eggs and fodder from countries suspected of being infected with the virus. A ban will also be placed on imports of waterfowl, terrestrial and ornamental birds, and surveillance will be boosted.

Dubai blood drive

A blood donation campaign was kicked off in the UAE by Sheikha Hind bint Maktoum, the wife of Dubai Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammad bin Rashid Al Maktoum, in a drive to raise blood supplies for sufferers of thalassaemia. Sheikha Hind donated blood and called upon Dubai residents to help children with the genetic disease.

Teresa Hale, who owns the Hale Clinic in London, plans to set up a branch of the complimentary medicine centre in Dubai in the next six months, reported Emirates Today. She says there is great potential for complementary medicine in Dubai, which is designed to support but not replace orthodox medicine.

Dr Ulrike Muschaweck, a German hernia specialist and founder and surgical chief at the Hernia Centre Munich, will address more than 200 doctors on the latest surgical treatment options at the Welcare Hospital in Dubai in December. Dr Muschaweck developed a novel hernia surgery technique called the 'minimal repair' or 'Muschaweck repair' technique.

UN plans UAE Aids campaign

The United Nations is to launch a nationwide HIV/Aids awareness campaign in the UAE next month, according to Gulf News. The focus will be on stopping transmission from mother to child. The campaign will work closely with local schools and the media.
