The UAE will hold a dry run to test emergency plans it has in place in the event of an outbreak of avian flu, according to Minister of Health Abd Rehman Al Midfa. He says the country remains free of the virus and that all steps to protect residents from an outbreak have been taken.

A hospital with a 24-hour medical clinic is being constructed in the Emirates Hills development in Dubai, reported 7Days. The medical clinic is due to open in February 2006 at the Springs Community Centre. Saudi's Ministry of Agriculture has denied media reports of an outbreak of bird flu in the southern part of the country, after veterinarians ruled out the virus as the cause of death in chickens on a farm in Surat Obaida, reported Arab News. The deputy minister said the birds might have died of Newcastle fever, a viral disease which affects birds.

The UAE Health Ministry is recommending that the level of flouride in UAE water be raised from 0.02 mg per litre to 0.5 to 0.7, reported Gulf News. Dubai officials said that the optimal level recommended by the World Health Organisation is 1 mg per litre which prevents around 50% of tooth decay.
