RAK opens casualty unit
Al Jazeera Al Hamra Medical Centre in Ras Al Khaimah has opened a new $2m casualty unit. The centre has three theatres for minor surgery and an intensive care unit. Traffic and Licencing officers had been agitating for the facility for some time due to the high car accident rate in the area.
WHO to certify UAE malaria-free
The World Health Organisation is likely to certify the UAE malaria-free by February 2006, reported Gulf News citing Health Ministry assistant director Dr Mahmoud Fikri. The UAE reported its last case of locally-generated malaria in 2000, and would become the fourth GCC country to be certified after Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar.
Mayo Clinic Ramadan hours
The Mayo Clinic's Heart Clinic at Dubai Healthcare City is operating on reduced hours during Ramadan; from 9am to 3pm daily, and 8pm to 10pm Mondays and Wednesdays. The clinic has specialists available for consultation about heart related conditions.
UAE breast cancer awareness
The UAE's Ministry of Health and Hoffmann-La Roche are running a breast cancer awareness campaign in an effort to promote early detection and treatment. The education drive will run through October and November, during which women will receive discounts on mammograms. GE Healthcare is providing two digital mammography machines for the Mother & Child Centre in Sharjah and the Jumeirah Health Centre in Dubai for the duration of the campaign.
Hospitals part of $680m plan
The UAE's Ministry of Public Works and Housing has allocated $680m for upgrading hospitals, clinics, houses, schools and roads in the northern emirates, reported Gulf News. Part of the funds will be used to build a specialist hospital in Ras Al Khaimah.
Warning on UV radiation
UV radiation is a major cause of eye damage in the region, and people should protect their eyes to prevent long term disability, according to Belhoul European Hospital's Dr Samir Jamal. He says risks can be reduced by using sunglasses, reducing exposure to light, and by consuming antioxidant rich food supplements. World Sight Day on 13 October, which is organised by Vision 2020, educates about visual impairment with the aim of eliminating avoidable blindness by 2020.
Doctors use Internet for info
UAE physicians use the Internet more than any other doctors in the region, for help in diagnosis and treatment, according to a study by online medical portal Univadis.md. The portal, which came online in July 2004, offers international and regional medical information, including up to date news on medical developments.
UAE aids earthquake victims
The UAE has donated $100m in aid assistance for people affected by Saturday's earthquake in Pakistan, reported WAM. The army has also been ordered to mobilise field hospitals in the quake affected areas to provide urgent medical assistance to survivors.
Heart disease deaths to rise
The percentage of deaths in the UAE due to heart disease will rise from 25% to 35% in the next five years, according to Sheikh Khalifa Hospital consultant cardiologist Dr Wael Al Mahmeed. He says that heart disease is now affecting younger people, and one of the main causes is smoking.
Earthquake victims, Gulf appeal
Pakistani associations across the Gulf region have appealed for cash, warm clothing and medicine to help those hit by the earthquake in Kashmir that has killed more than 20,000 people and left many more homeless in the cold of winter.
Breast cancer awareness
The BurJuman shopping centre in Dubai is highlighting breast cancer awareness this month as part of the Safe & Sound campaign. Oncologists point out that early detection of breast cancer increases the liklihood of survival from 18% to 93%. Visit, www.safeandsound.ae.
World Mental Health Day
Annual World Mental Health Day falls on October 10 and Belhoul European Hospital is to hold a free 'Question and answers in matters of the mind' session for the community from 6-8pm. WMHD provides a unique opportunity to raise awareness about mental health. This year's theme is 'Mental and physical health across the lifespan'.
Dubai merges aid bodies
The Dubai Aid City and Dubai Humanitarian City are to be merged into a new non-profit entity in the Jebel Ali Free Zone. Its mission will be to equip the entire humanitarian relief system and speed the provision of emergency aid by levering the efficiency of the Dubai ports and customs free zone.
Jail for errant pharmacists
The UAE Ministry of Health is preparing legislation that will send pharmacists to jail for selling counterfeit drugs. Officials told Gulf News that an estimated 10% of counterfeit drugs sold in the UAE are sold in pharmacies whose pharmacists presently do not face jail sentences.
AD inspects 5m chickens
The Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi has said that up to 5m chickens from shops and farms are to be inspected for bird flu, reported Gulf News. The Abu Dhabi executive council recently approved a $10m budget to ensure that the emirate is free of bird flu.
