Al Jazeera Al Hamra Medical Centre in Ras Al Khaimah has opened a new $2m casualty unit. The centre has three theatres for minor surgery and an intensive care unit. Traffic and Licencing officers had been agitating for the facility for some time due to the high car accident rate in the area.

The World Health Organisation is likely to certify the UAE malaria-free by February 2006, reported Gulf News citing Health Ministry assistant director Dr Mahmoud Fikri. The UAE reported its last case of locally-generated malaria in 2000, and would become the fourth GCC country to be certified after Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar.

The UAE's Ministry of Health and Hoffmann-La Roche are running a breast cancer awareness campaign in an effort to promote early detection and treatment. The education drive will run through October and November, during which women will receive discounts on mammograms. GE Healthcare is providing two digital mammography machines for the Mother & Child Centre in Sharjah and the Jumeirah Health Centre in Dubai for the duration of the campaign.
