Iraq health needs $8bn

Iraq's ailing health sector needs up to $8bn over the next four years for reconstruction, according to the deputy health minister. The US pledged $786m in 2004 for hospitals and the purchase of medical equipment, but a US health official says up to 25% of the funds was diverted to pay for increased security costs.

Turkey's neighbours, bird flu risk

The UN Food and Agriculture Organisation is warning that bird flu could become endemic in Turkey and seriously threaten neighbouring countries, following reports that two people died in Turkey after becoming infected with the H5N1 strain. Turkey's neighbours, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Iraq, Iran and Syria, are advised to be on high alert.

HSBC, bird flu plans

UK-based bank HSBC has drawn up plans to deal with the potential absence of up to 50% of its staff in a "worst case scenario" in the event of a pandemic brought on by bird flu, reported Reuters. The bank says our scale means that we have the necessary resources to maintain a reasonable level of service even in the face of serious threats.

Thalassemia drug on the way

A new drug called Exjade, which helps with symptoms associated with thalassemia, could soon be available in the UAE, reported Emirates Today. The drug is administered by mouth rather than the traditional treatments which are pumped under the skin. Doctors say the introduction of the new drug should increase patient compliance rates.

The Ras Al Khaimah Economic Department has warned three gymnasiums for illegally offering drugs that promote muscle development, reported Gulf News. Officials said that gymnasiums needed to obtain special permission from the Ministry of Health to sell such drugs.

The Al Wasl Hospital's Thalassemia Centre is to lead a detailed study of this genetic blood disorder among UAE nationals, to replace a random study made in 2002, reported Gulf News. Thalassemia is a potentially life-threatening disorder characterised by the breakdown of heamoglobin in the blood.

Salama signs with MedNet

Salama Islamic Arab Insurance has signed an agreement with MedNet Group, a subsidiary of reinsurance company Munich Re, to provide shariah compliant health insurance in the UAE. MedNet UAE will process all Salama's medical takaful claims when the service is launched.

AD acts on water chemical

Abu Dhabi authorities are working to remove bromate, a chemical with suspected cancer links, from the city's drinking water supplies, reported Gulf News. The substance can appear when drinking water is produced from seawater. The plan is to reduce levels to the World Health Organisation standard of 10 parts per billion, after levels in Abu Dhabi plants were reported at up to 100 parts per bn.
