Kuwait, $107.8m on programmes

Kuwait's Ministry of Health is to spend $107.8m on 11 programmes according to Al Watan and cited by the Kuwait Times. Plans include the purchase of mobile diabetic units, the building of more diabetic clinics as well as the funding of various awareness campaigns. Some of the money will go towards staff development.

Sharjah water shortage

Residents in the Maysaloon and Al Mussalla areas of Sharjah are hoping that water shortages which have affected them for well over a week are about to be rectified, reported Gulf News. Nursery schools have had to shut down, while residents have been forced to buy extra bottled water. Water has only been available from 5am-8am and 5pm-7pm.

Genzyme opens at Dubiotech

Genzyme Corporation, a biotechnology company, is opening an office at Dubai Biotechnology and Research Park to provide regional sales and marketing support to customers and distributors for its enzyme replacement treatments. The company's products and services are focused on rare inherited disorders, kidney disease, orthopaedics, cancer, transplant and immune diseases, and diagnostic testing.

Jebel Ali family health week

Jebel Ali Hospital and Ibn Battuta Mall are running a Family Health Week campaign to encourage people to take better care of their wellbeing. Free consultations, blood pressure and blood sugar checks will be offered at a kiosk in the mall. There will also be themed activities for children.

Ascent medical fund makes buy

US-based Ascent Group has made its first acquisition under a $100m fund which promotes the medical industry in the Middle East. The Ascent Medical Technology Fund II invests in US companies that are then required to use at least 50% of their funds to operate or produce products or services in the Middle East.

Aspects of Saudi's pharmaceutical industry will be examined at a symposium organised by the Jeddah Chamber of Commerce and Industry, according to Arab News. Debate will cover areas such as quality management standards, medical errors, poisoning and antidotes, addiction, and drug abuse.

Global climate change conference

Environmentalists are warning that Africa could suffer greater effects from global warming than previously feared, according to a UN report cited by Euronews. The UN has brought together delegates from 189 countries in Nairobi to discuss climate change strategy after the Kyoto protocol expires in 2012. The US, which pulled out of Kyoto, produces a quarter of the world's greenhouse gases.

Warning against self-medication

UAE health authorities are warning residents about the dangers of self-medicating, following the death of two-year-old boy in Sharjah, Gulf News reported. The boy probably died after having an adverse drug reaction, said a health ministry official. People should always seek advice from doctors about medication, especially with sick children, another health official said.

RCS sets up diabetes centres

The Red Crescent Society has set up 25 diabetes testing centres in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain as part of ten-year plan to curb the rising incidence of the disease in locals, according to WAM. Tests will be conducted at a nominal fee and a data base established to help with future strategies.

Oman opens new health clinic

Oman's health ministry inaugurated the Al Ansab Health Centre Saturday. The centre includes outpatient male and female clinics, treatment rooms, dental clinic, and a mother and child healthcare unit. The project cost around $1m, which was paid by a local donation.

Anti-smoking campaign push

The Bahrain Anti-smoking Society has applied for a government grant for three new campaigns to curb smoking among residents, Gulf daily News reported. The latest campaigns will target adolescents and women smokers - particularly those that are "addicted" to shisha.

Teachers to get health cover

Public school teachers in Saudi will have health cover from early next, under plans being worked out by the education and health ministries, according to Arab News. Meanwhile, a comprehensive health insurance scheme for Saudi nationals and expatriates is being put in place. It will cost $8bn, according to the health minister.

"Black magic" preacher detained

A Ras Al Khaimah preacher, who had previously been deported from UAE, has been arrested for practicing black magic and medical fraud, according to Gulf News. Police acted on complaints that the man had been claiming to be able to treat incurable diseases. He had slipped back into the country on a visit visa and got a job at a local mosque.

Jordan cancer fundraiser in Dubai

A fundraiser for Jordan's King Hussein Cancer Foundation takes place at Grand Hyatt Dubai on 21 November. More than 300 guests will attend the charity dinner which is being held under the patronage of Princess Haya bint Al Hussain, wife of Dubai Ruler Sheikh Mohammad bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
