A US-UAE partnership for breast cancer awareness and research has been set up by medical professionals and government bodies from the Middle East and United States. The public-private partnership will run workplace education programmes as well as increase support mechanisms for women in the Middle East.

Kuwait-based National Projects Holding has signed an agreement with Dubai Industrial City to establish Dubai Recycling Park, which it says will be the first fully integrated waste management and recycling centre in the Middle East. The centre will handle waste from across Dubai as will as from within the industrial complex. Construction is due to commence in mid-2007 and is slated for completion 18 months later.

The UK's prime minister has warned that the world cannot afford to wait before tackling climate change, after a study suggested global warming could shrink the global economy by 20%, the BBC reports. But taking action now would cost just 1% of global GDP, the study estimated. Recent UN data shows the emission of greenhouse gases is increasing.
An American cardiovascular expert is to perform a procedure called a cardiac catheterisation on more than 20 UAE national children suffering from a hole in the heart, reported Gulf News. Dr Michael Slack from Baltimore's Johns Hopkins Medical University Centre will carry out the operations on the patients aged between three and nine at the Tawam Hospital in Al Ain. A few non national children have also been selected.

Oman and Morocco have signed a co-operation deal relating to various healthcare sectors including the exchange of information and expertise, reported the Times of Oman. The two nations will support each other in co-ordinating programmes focusing on conditions including TB and Aids as well as family planning. The agreement also extends to medical equipment and research.
A new private hospital called the International Medical Centre is set to open in Jeddah today, reported Arab News. The facility will specialise in a number of fields and is being opened with the co-operation of the Cleveland Clinic in the US. The hospital has 3,000 beds and cost $133.4m to build.
Neuroscientists gathering in Dubai ahead of an annual congress have praised the technological standards and facilities in the UAE with some advanced surgical equipment in use in neurosurgical procedures that is not yet widely available in the West, reported Gulf News. Professor Michael Buchfelder, chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery at Germany's Erlangen University, said, however, that the region lacked proper competitive research.

More than 4,000 people participated in the BurJuman Centre's Pink Walkathon, part of its Safe and Sound campaign to spread awareness and education about breast cancer and early detection. Funds raised from the walk will go to the Breast Cancer Foundation fo the Emirates. The Walkathon was supported by Damas, Taktical, Saks 5th Avenue and Samsung.

Hospitals and medical centres in Ras Al Khaimah had to deal with a spate of food poisoning cases over the Eid holiday, reported Gulf News. 20 patients, complaining of high temperatures and diarrhoea, were given first aid treatment but all were discharged. The patients were aged between 12 and 20 and it is not yet clear how they contracted food poisoning.

Saudi Arabia will soon be free of malaria due to a successful public campaign carried out by government agencies, according to Health Minister Dr Hamad Al Manie quoted in Khaleej Times. He said there had been no reports of the mosquito-borne disease in Jizan, despite floods in August.

Experts in the field of neuroscience will converge on Dubai's Dusit Hotel for a medical congress and exhibition to discuss the latest advances in treatment. Topics covered include neural tumors and neurovascular diseases, according to a statement by the UAE's Neuro Spinal Hospital. The conference is being organised by the Emirates Neuro-Science Society. Events run from 28-30 October 2006.

A senior UAE environment official has challenged a WWF report which claims UAE residents were putting the most stress per capita on the planet, Gulf News reported. Secretary-General of the Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi, Majid Al Mansouri, said it was unfair to compare tropical countries with nations in arid zones. The WWF's 2006 Living Planet Report estimates that on current trends man will need two planets' worth of natural resources by 2050.

Indian scientists have managed to extract juice from the buckthorn berry, believed to be good for the heart, the BBC reported. Sea buckthorn is a known source of cholesterol-lowering compounds, but extracting its juices was difficult. Using high speed centrifugation, the researchers separated the juice from the solid sludge, leading to potential treatments to prevent clogging of the arteries.
