ETA Star Healthcare has selected Swiss Sonnenhof, a leading healthcare group in Switzerland, to manage the operations of RAK Hospital in Ras Al Khaimah. The 65 bed multi-speciality hospital, which will be inaugurated after Ramadan, has been set up by ETA Star Healthcare and the Government of Ras Al Khaimah. Sonnenhof is making its first foray into the region with this arrangement.

Kuwait has ordered its emergency and health services to be on a state of alert following a recent cholera outbreak in Iraq, reported Kuwait Times. A source at the Ministry of Health, which is monitoring the outbreak in Iraq closely, said that although the situation in Kuwait is 'safe,' people should avoid importing food from Iraq.
A Dubai Department of Health and Medical Services report has revealed that the number of deaths caused by high blood pressure in Dubai is three times higher than in the rest of the emirates, reported Emirates Today. The report adds that stress due to traffic jams, stock market fluctuations and the high cost of living are among the causes of the condition. Diseases linked to high blood pressure were among the top 10 causes of death among UAE nationals in 2005.

The UAE's Sharjah Municipality has formed a new committee under the Security Section and Veterinary Services Unit of the General Health Department to conduct inspections of all farms and poultry shops, in a fresh move to keep the bird flu out of the emirate, reported Emirates Today. Inspectors will search for potentially infected birds, assess the general health standards of poultry kept for sale and seek ways to improve the quality of the product for consumers.
A Ramadan blood donation drive has been proving popular in Al Ain with large numbers of donors coming forward, reported Gulf News. The blood bank at the Tawam Hospital has been sending out mobile units to shopping malls and mosques throughout the city. People of all nationalities have been donating blood, which will be provided to government and private hospitals across Al Ain.

Qatar has witnessed a 50% hike in the incidence of communicable diseases in Q1 of this year when compared to the same period seven years ago in 2000, reported the Peninsula. The reason for the dramatic increase has been put down to an outbreak of chickenpox which accounts for 40.9% of the 2,115 cases. This was followed by hepatitis C, hepatitis B and herpes zoster.
A new therapy centre for sufferers of autism is set to open in Abu Dhabi before the end of the year, reported the Khaleej Times. The facility will be a branch of the US based New England Centre for Children, a non-profit educational organisation. The centre will cater to six UAE national children, aged between three and six, and each student will be assigned their own personal teacher.

The American Hospital Dubai (AHD) has started constructing a seven storey extension at its Dubai site, reported the Khaleej Times. The new building will have 242 new beds, all in private rooms, and will cover an area of around 500,000 sq ft. The AHD is also upgrading other facilities including a new joint replacement centre of excellence and seven more examination rooms in its emergency department.

The UAE's Ministry of Health has announced that all UAE nationals will be required to receive annual medical check-ups, reported the Khaleej Times. The check-ups will be free. Dr. Mariam Mattar, Assistant Undersecretary for Public Health and Primary Health Care at the MoH, said checkups will also be mandatory for expatriates at some point in the future, but they will not be free.
