Health services 'failing' underprivileged
- A four-day international conference on primary health care which opened in Doha on November 1, called to bridge the gap between the health 'haves' and 'have-nots'. At an opening speech the former head of the World Health Organisation, Dr Halfden Mahler said that despite impressive achievements, health services were still failing to reach those who need them most, both in rural areas as well as the rapidly expanding urban areas.

New medical residency medical centre to open in Dubai
- A 5,000-capacity, one-stop residency medical fitness centre is set to open within the next few weeks. Officials from the Dubai Naturalisation and Residency Department (DNRD) will also have an office at the same centre for to speed up the processing of employment visas.

UAE onboard UN body on tropical disease
- The UAE has been elected to the Joint Coordinating Board (JCB), UN's Tropical Disease Research Programme, WAM has cited a senior official at the Ministry of Health. As a new member, it will take part in the upcoming JCB meeting to be held in Geneva, Switzerland, from June 15 to June 17, 2009.

New medical product development centre opens in Jordan
- The new Philadelphia Biological and Medical Product Development Centre is to open today in Amman, Jordan. The Centre will be the only healthcare product development hub worldwide that provides preclinical evaluation, full-service clinical research, core lab facilities, as well as cell engineering and culturing, according to a press release. Peggy Farley, the Centre's Chairperson, said the centre will place the Middle East firmly on the map as a global medical technology leader. Farley is also co-founder of the Ascent Medical Technology Funds, including Fund II which is the financial instrument providing the funding for the project. Recently, the Centre successfully carried out a Bioheart Inc sponsored study to support the treatment of potentially life-threatening, heart-related aliments that saw positive results of a pre-clinical study of the Adipose-Derived Stem Cells (ADSCs) therapy study for heart patients.

Foreign trips for medical travel often rejected
- Eighty percent of patients in Abu Dhabi requesting to travel abroad for medical treatment are rejected by the emirate's health authority because they are not being routed through the proper channel, reported Gulf News. Dr Ali Obaid Al Ali, Director of Health Regulation at the Health Authority Abu Dhabi, said a request to be treated abroad must come through a hospital that is medically affiliated with the Abu Dhabi Health Services Company. The case is then reviewed by a medical board at the HAAD patient care department, which consists of a team of seven doctors from various specialties and hospitals.

Kuwait clinic offers new arthritis procedures
- The Hadi Clinic in Kuwait is introducing new and advanced surgery techniques for arthritis sufferers for the first time in the country. The total knee and hip replacement procedures are based on the latest surgical practices and use the most advanced joint implant technology available. The new surgeries have been introduced with the arrival of the hospital's new orthopedic consultant, Dr Frank Barnbeck, who brings over 30 years of top level experience in the field, according to a press statement.

Specialist children's hospital plan for Saudi
- Following a decree by King Abdullah, King Abdul Aziz Medical City of the National Guard is to have a specialist referral children's hospital. The new facility, the King Abdullah Specialist Children's Hospital, will treat chronic diseases.

Rotavirus vaccine successful
- A test held in the US city of Philadelphia has shown a 70% drop in hospitalisation rates for diarrhea among young children following the use of an oral rotavirus vaccine. One report to a meeting of the American Society of Microbiology and the Infectious Diseases Society of America that admission rates amongst babies aged between six and eleven months fell by 94%.
