  • New hospital opens in Dubai Healthcare City

  • The new City Hospital at Dubai Healthcare City was officially openeed on Wednesday. The $100m facility will have a service manager specifically employed to oversee its hospitality services, which include in-room patient entertainment systems, online ordering and catering. The hospital's dedicated VIP floor, meanwhile, will have its own separate entrance, lift and limousine parking, along with VIP suites, presidential suites and a royal suite, with access to a private swimming pool and gymnasium.

  • Long waits for maternity patients in Abu Dhabi

  • Maternity services at Abu Dhabi's specialist hospital are struggling to cope with demand, with heavily pregnant women left waiting for up to five hours to see a doctor, The National has reported. A new complex computer system is blamed for the delays at Corniche Hospital, where on some days there are more than 100 women in the waiting room.

  • Heart procedures on UAE newborns on rise

  • A total of 237 pediatric cardiac surgeries have been performed on newborn babies in Abu Dhabi this past year alone, Gulf News has reported. Across the UAE, newborns undergo a larger number of open heart surgeries than adults. According to Dr. Laszlo Kiraly, Head, Senior Consultant, Pediatric Cardiac Surgery at Sheikh Khalifa Medical City, the birth rate in the UAE is 2.5 times higher than in European countries, which results in a higher number of pediatric cardiac patients.

  • King Fahd to have 300-bed centre

  • The King Fahd Medical City in Riyadh is to have a 300 bed oncology centre the Minister of Health Dr. Hamad Al-Manie announced during a conference on breast cancer on Saturday. The director of the Prince Sultan Centre for Heamophilia and Tumours Dr Abdul Aziz Al-Humaidi further predicted that 60,000 cancer cases would be diagnosed and treated in the country annually by 2030.

  • Herbal medicine warning

  • Medical officials in Ras Al Khaimah have issued a warning against the use of herbal medicines to treat diabetes in children. This follows instances of certain shops in the UAE emirate claiming that these medications, rather than medically prescribed solutions, were the only effective remedy.

  • Questions asked on Wareed health system

  • Concerns have been raised on how to ensure patient safety in the run up to the implementation of the UAE's Wareed health information system. Raj Singh, healthcare solutions consultant EMEA, Hitachi Data Systems said 'serious consideration to the actual requirements and objectives of the program' had to be considered. The Wareed health information system , which will run in hospitals and clinics, is dues to be running by 2011. It aims to improve medical care and ensure patient safety, providing access to medical and health information between patients and doctors.

  • Glaxo buys Bristol-Myers Egypt unit

  • GlaxoSmithKline is buying the Egyptian mature products business of Bristol-Myers Squibb Co for $210m, to extend the British drug company's recent expansion into emerging markets, reported Reuters. Glaxo said it will become the leading pharmaceutical company in Egypt with a market share of 9% by acquiring 20 branded products in four therapeutic disease areas, including Duricef (antibiotic); Capozide and Capoten (ACE inhibitors); Theragran-H (iron supplement) and Kenacomb (topical steroid).
