UAE to link hospitals online
- Hospitals and clinics in the UAE will be connected via an online network by 2011 to improve medical care and ensure patient safety.Wareed, the health information system launched on Tuesday, will link 14 hospitals and 68 clinics in the northern emirates. The network aims to provide instantaneous access to medical records and patient history.

E-coli found in Dubai sea waters
- Dubai is suffering from high levels of bacteria in areas of its coastline close to the Offshore Sailing Club after months of illegal sewage dumping into the sea. Tests on the water found that it contained three times the legal levels of faecal coliforms - up to 70 per 100ml. The maximum allowed is 20 per 100ml. E-coli was also found. The bacteria can cause ear infections, typhoid fever and hepatitis A while e-coli causes gastroenteritis and urinary tract infections.

Smoking ban violators face fines
- Individuals who violate the smoking ban in public places in the UAE emirate of Ras Al Khaimah will be fined Dhs5,000 or more, a municipality official told Khaleej Times. The ban, which went into effect on Sunday, applies to hotels, restaurants, cafes, shopping malls, sports halls, men and women's salons and other enclosed public places, said Mubarak Ali Al Shamsi, Chairman of Ras Al Khaimah Municipality.

Mental health care in UAE to be overhauled
- The Abu Dhabi government plans to overhaul mental health care in the emirate by changing public attitudes and brdging gaps in treatment and funding for people with mental health conditions, reported The National. The Health Authority - Abu Dhabi is researching how access to care can be increased and paid for while looking at ways to change perceptions of a traditionally taboo subject. Currently there is a lack of psychiatrists and hospitals and no standardised means of funding treatment for mental health conditions.

Bank donates brain care medical kit
- BankMuscat in Oman has donated five muscle-stimulating and mobilising medical machines to the Directorate of Health Services to assist children with brain paralysis. As part of its CSR initiatives, the bank said it hopes to 'provide resources that address the specific developmental needs of these children to overcome movement challenges that will secure a more prosperous future'.

Oman Healthcare City plans dropped
- Kuwait-based Gulf Investment House has announced that it has abandoned plans to develop a $1bn Healthcare City 100 km outside of Muscat, MEED has reported. The company did not say why the plans for the mixed use development, which was to have included medical colleges, hospitals and hotels, were dropped.

Thalassaemia unit opens in RAK
- Ras Al Khaimah The Medical District is to open a new thalassaemia unit shortly to serve thalassaemia patients and spare them regular trips to other emirates for treatment, Gulf News has reported. A total of 33 people in Ras Al Khaimah with thalassaemia do not have access to necessary drugs, which can be taken orally in the form of tablets, as such drugs are not available in the public hospitals or even the private pharmacies.

Herbal medicines 'safe'
- Herbal medicines sold in the UAE are safe as they have been tested by and registered with the country's Ministry of Health, the Khaleej Times has quoted a ministry official as saying. The official added that products sold online could not be similarly approved.
