Qatar has created a Supreme Council for Health that will look after health services provided by both the government and the private sector. Officials have said that the Council is empowered to fix the tariffs of medical services provided by state and private operators and decide on the pricing of medicines and tariffs of paramedical services, as well as supervising pharmacies, laboratories and training centres associated with healthcare. The Council will also be responsible for implementing a new health insurance law.
Intel and General Electric have announced an alliance to develop and sell technology to help care for the elderly and chronically ill in their homes, the Wall Street Journal has reported. Intel CEO Paul Otellini and GE CEO Jeff Immelt agreed to invest more than $250m over five years on research and development associated with the effort.
A recently developed artificial human heart may be clinically trialled among patients in Qatar. EADS-subsidiary Carmat and Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) have held several rounds of discussions and are waiting for the approval from the government to go ahead for the clinical trial, according to The Peninsula. 'We are on the verge of starting clinical trials; and pending the approval of French and Qatari medical authorities, the artificial heart could be implanted in the first human patient within three years,' said Mohamed S Al Kuwari, General Manager EADS Competence Centre of Qatar (CCQ), a partner company of QSTP.
The new geriatric hospital, Obaidallah Geriatric Hospital was inaugurated in Ras Al Khaimah with 126 beds. The hospital will be run by the UAE Ministry of Health and would also serve as homecare centre. The hospital has 36 double rooms and nine wards apart from well equipped laboratory, intensive care unit, blood bank and physiotherapy facilities. Built at a cost of Dhs24m, it was financed by philanthropic businessman, Mohammed Ibrahim Obaidallah.

The Dubai Autism Centre today is launching a month-long campaign to mark World Autism Awareness Day. The campaign aims to increase public understanding of autism and underline the behaviour of children with autism, in addition to promoting community acceptance of children with autism. The UAE does not require mandatory screening of children for autism. Doctors instead have to track the child's growth.

A new Gulf-wide initiative has been launched to to tackle diabetes, one of the region's most common diseases. The campaign, which runs until 2018, includes guidelines for patients and doctors on how to prevent and treat diabetes. Everyone over the age of 30 is urged to be tested for the disease.
Qatar's Health Minister Dr Aisha Al Zeyada launched the country's first healthcare quality department that will assess the level of services provided by all healthcare providers. The minister said that the department, which is made up of nine healthcare professionals, would look into the general situation of healthcare provision across Qatar, and come up with short and long-term strategic plans.
UAE Ministry of Health is setting new rules and monitoring systems to better control the sale of complementary medicines and health supplements. The new rules are in response to the increased use of herbal, traditional, complementary medicines, medicated cosmetics and medical devices, said Khaleej Times. The Director of Registration and Drug Control Department said that there are many unlicensed complementary medicines and products on the market.

People as young as 18 in the UAE have suffered heart attacks brought on by an unhealthy lifestyle, stress and poor diet. Dr Nooshin Bazargani, cardiologist at Dubai Hospital said that seven or eight cases involving 18-year-olds had been treated at the Dubai Heart Centre in Dubai Hospital in the past two years. 'We have also seen several cases of under-30 patients mostly from Asian backgrounds,' she told Khaleej Times.

The fourteenth edition of the International Pharmaceuticals & Technologies Conference & Exhibition (Duphat 2009) is set to open on Sunday at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre, until 31st March. The three-day event will host more than 300 international companies. Organisers said exhibition space is 20% bigger compared to last year, with Chinese companies participating for the first time.

Qatar's Hamad Medical Corporation HMC has announced the launch of a colorectal cancer awareness campaign. HMC said the month-long campaign will aim to raise awareness about the disease, which is on rise in Qatar, according to Dr M Ussama Al Homsi, Head, Haematology and Oncology Department, Al Amal Hospital.
A new $5.5m eye hospital has been opened at Dubai Healthcare City. Magrabi Eye Hospital features cutting-edge technological capabilities and the latest in advanced eye care and treatment equipment, according to a press statement. The facility, which will be manned by eight eye specialists and 39 nursing and administrative staff, will treat a number of eye diseases such as refractive ailments, cornea diseases, cataracts, glaucoma, vitreo-retinal diseases and paediatric ophthalmology diseases, and offer treatments like oculoplastic surgeries, artificial eyes and fitting of contact lenses. The new hospital features new technological capabilities and the latest methods in eye diseases treatment. GlaxoSmithKline, the world's second-largest drugmaker, has released a statement saying it will share more than 800 of its patents with other firms to develop new medicines and help reduce the cost of drugs in impoverished areas starting from next week. The announcement came in the company's annual corporate responsibility report following a pledge from its CEO Andrew Witty to help poor countries.

The UAE' Ministry of Health is developing new regulations to streamline research projects on health subjects as part of a tie up with the World Health Organisation (WHO), reported Khaleej Times. The MoH has established a National Centre for Biostatistics and Health Research that will develop a strategic plan for conducting and monitoring health research.
