  • Asthma high among UAE children

  • According to health experts, there is high prevalence of asthma among children in the UAE with one in five children in the UAE having the ailment, Khaleej Times has reported. Professor Ruby Pawankar, chairperson of the first Middle East Asia Allergy Asthma Immunology Congress set to take place in Dubai, said the rapid increase in the prevalence of this disorder is also affected by social and economic environments and there is a need to address public awareness among patients and practitioners.

  • Negligent UAE doctors may face stiffer penalties

  • Doctors in the UAE could face criminal charges for medical negligence under proposals in a draft law presented to the Federal National Council yesterday by the Ministry of Health, reported The National. A statement from Humaid Mohammed Obaid al Qattami, the Minister of Health, outlined proposals to set up a Higher Medical Liability Committee, bring criminal sanctions against doctors who breach terms of care and set up mortality and morbidity committees in every hospital to examine each death that occurs there.

  • UAE plans new pharmacy rules

  • New federal regulations for pharmacies and their products will come into effect soon, according to Dr Amin Al Amiri, CEO of Medical Practices and Licensing at the UAE's Ministry of Health. The new pharmacy law aims to include regulations regarding the various classes of drugs and medical products, guarantee property rights, prevent economic fraud and ensure the safety of patients.

  • Singapore company to manage Abu Dhabi hospital

  • Healthcare investment and development company United Eastern Medical Services has selected Singapore's ParkwayHealth to manage its Danat Al Emarat women and children's hospital in Abu Dhabi. ParkwayHealth will provide clinical development and management services under an agreement that will see Danat Al Emarat become the first private hospital in the UAE to be run by an international operator, according to a press statement.

  • Committee aims to reduce hospital errors

  • The UAE's Ministry of Health has set up committees comprising senior consultants to spot hospital errors at an early stage and take swift action to avoid repetition. Humaid Mohammed Obaid Al Qattami, the UAE's Minister of Health, says the cost of rectifying hospital errors is seven times the cost of scheduled or routine treatment.

  • UAE closes five pharmacies

  • The UAE's Ministry of Health has shut down five pharmacies across the country for repeated violations of the laws regulating pharmaceutical practice and medical ethics. The violations included the employment of non-licensed pharmacists and allowing administrators to work as pharmacists in the absence of the pharmacist in charge. Further violations included failing to keep controlled drugs in locked cabinets.

  • Al Ain Hospital has launched a Dhs140m renovation plan to modernise and expand its services, Gulf News has reported. A new facility inside the premises of Al Ain Hospital is also being considered as a teaching hospital for treatment, education, and research.

  • UAE to get its first dialysis centre

  • Set to open by 2010, the first independent dialysis centre in the UAE will be located in Sharjah. The centre aims to cater to patients from all emirates. The dialysis centre is an initiative of Friends of Kidney Patients, a Sharjah-based organisation operating under the Supreme Council for Family Affairs, which is composed of volunteer health care workers.
