The Health Authority Abu Dhabi (HAAD) has signed a five-year contract with Pearson VUE to provide licence examinations online to help attract high-caliber health professionals from overseas in 15 different specialties. Health professionals who are interested in applying for a job in Abu Dhabi can now register, schedule and sit licence examinations in their home countries, HAAD said.

A new study by Al Kindi Specialised Hospital has shown that obesity among females in Bahrain is expected to reach 40% by 2015. One third of the adult population is already obese in the country. According to the World Health Organisation, the prevalence of obesity in Bahrain was put at 21.2% among males and 35.2% among females.
Free medical check-ups will be available at the Fifth Barbar Club Heath Festival, which is due to take place in Bahrain in May. Visitors will get blood pressure, sugar level and dental checks, while pharmacies will have their own stands and give free consultations on different medicines. Officials from various hospitals, pharmacies and medical societies will also be present.
General Electric Company and the Qatar Foundation have signed an agreement to launch health care business and research initiatives. The joint venture between the two entities will be based in Doha and will expand throughout the Middle East and Africa regions. The new company will establish healthcare IT product development, training and education facilities at the GE Advanced Technology and Research Centre at Qatar Science and Technology Park.
Dr Nassim Ibrahim, director of primary health care department in Sharjah, revealed that 38% of people in the UAE suffer from high blood pressure, which is the main cause of heart diseases and brain strokes. Dr Ibrahim's comments came during a work shop about measuring and treating heart diseses.

Tawam Hospital has been awarded the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) certification for its food safety standards. The hospital serves on average 1,000,000 meals a year, and has implemented the HACCP standards in June 2008. Small clinics and hospitals in the UAE emirate of Sharjah are illegally dumping dangerous medical waste, including exposed needles and bloodstained dressings, while the city's incinerator remains inoperable, reported The National. A municipal official acknowledged the illegal dumping, saying the emirate is waiting for spare parts to repair the incinerator. He gave no timetable for when the incinerator would be ready.

Private healthcare developments in Saudi Arabia have been cancelled or suspended due to the global economic downturn, reported Arabic daily Al Hayat. Dr Muhammed Mutabqani, chairman of the National Health Committee at the Saudi Council of Chambers of Commerce, said funds were no longer available to continue with projects. Owners have now been forced to give up on new projects despite the need for thousands of more beds.
UAE-based National Health Insurance Company - Daman is launching the '1.5 Million Steps' competition to help raise awareness of the importance of walking and the dangers of child obesity and its connection to various diseases. The initiative will see 4,000 students, aged between 11 and 16 years, from 40 Abu Dhabi emirate schools taking part over a period of two days. The aim of the initiative is for each student to exceed the recommended 10,000 steps that the average person should walk each day in order for each school to collectively walk 1.5 million steps over two days. This educational initiative marking Daman's enrolment of 1.6 million members into its various insurance plans is to be kicked off on March 17. It will see 4,000 students, aged between 11 and 16 years, from 40 Abu Dhabi emirate schools taking part over a period of two days.

A four-day international conference on Environmental Health bringing together more than 100 scholars, researchers, experts began yesterday in Abu Dhabi. The conference aims to contribute to the global debate and effort to discuss issues relating to the linkages of environment and health at the global, regional and national levels. The Conference is organized by Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi and the World Health Organization's Regional Centre for Environmental Health Activities.

Kuwait's Health Ministry Assistant Undersecretary for Medical Services Dr. Yousif Al-Nesf said that the ministry will be signing employment contracts for about 2,000 local and foreign nurses. The ministry said the move was needed to meet demand for nurses, and it noted that only those who had acquired a Bachelors degree or diploma in nursing would be hired.
The UAE Minister of Health H.E Humaid Al Qutami and Jean-Marc Voissier, General Manager of Sanofi-Aventis Pharmaceuticals Gulf, are launching a three year diabetes and atherothrombosis awareness campaign, in hope of reducing the high number of instances of these diseases in the country. With the second highest level of diabetes incidence in the world, Qutami described the campaign as 'very crucial'. 'Diabetes and atherothrombosis are preventable lifestyle diseases, and so the key achievement of this campaign will be the prevention and management of diabetes through education,' he said.

Kuwait's Ministry of Health is to run a week-long campaign from later this week on the correct use of antibiotics. It will follow on from today's conference on antibiotics, called "Wisely Use Me, Before You Lose Me". Health Ministry official Haifa Al-Mousa said that the campaign will shed light on the declining effects of antibiotics on cure-resistant microbial strains that have emerged as a result of the incorrect use of antibiotics.
