Kuwait launches antibiotics campaign

Kuwait's Ministry of Health is to run a week-long campaign from later this week on the correct use of antibiotics. It will follow on from today's conference on antibiotics, called "Wisely Use Me, Before You Lose Me". Health Ministry official Haifa Al-Mousa said that the campaign will shed light on the declining effects of antibiotics on cure-resistant microbial strains that have emerged as a result of the incorrect use of antibiotics.

Qatar MoH launches Rotavirus campaign

The Qatar Ministry of Health is to begin a new round of vaccinations for children against the rotavirus. The Minister of Health Dr Sheikha Ghalia bint Mohammed Al Thani launched the vaccination campaign last month. Rotavirus causes high fever, persistent vomiting and explosive watery diarrhea resulting in dehydration and electrolyte imbalance. All infants aged between two and four months have been vaccinated against the disease.

Telesurgery performed in Abu Dhabi

The first telesurgery performed in Abu Dhabi was on a 14-year-old Emirati girl during the fourth Abu Dhabi Annual International Surgery Conference. The operating surgeon performed the one-and-a-half hour minimally invasive surgery in front of a team of surgeons. The procedure was seen live via a television screen - a new procedure known as telesurgery or remote surgery.

Deltamed wins consultancy for Clover Clinic

Al Mazaya has awarded the consultancy services for its Clover Clinic project to Deltamed. The contract will see Deltamed provide consultancy services regarding all medically related services at Clover Clinic, including distribution of medical facilities such as clinics, laboratories, x-ray labs, physical therapy, pharmacies, and plastic surgery clinics throughout the project. Deltamed will also oversee the final finishing of floorings, painting, walls, and disinfectants, as well as obtain licenses to open clinics and obtain dealerships concerning drugs and medical equipment.

Merck and Schering-Plough merge

Merck and Co, Inc and Schering-Plough Corporation have announced a merger agreement under which Merck and Schering-Plough will combine, under the name Merck, in a stock and cash transaction. Under the terms of the agreement, Schering-Plough shareholders will receive 0.5767 shares and $10.50 in cash for each share of Schering-Plough. Each Merck share will automatically become a share of the combined company. 'The combined company will benefit from a formidable research and development pipeline, a significantly broader portfolio of medicines and an expanded presence in key international markets, particularly in high-growth emerging markets,' said Merck Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Richard T. Clark, who will lead the combined company.

UAE doctors see 40% rise in bronchitis patients

Changing weather conditions are contributing to a 40% rise in patients complaining from bronchitis and upper respiratory infections in the past two months in the UAE, doctors say. Bronchitis is a condition that often follows a respiratory infection and/or a slight cold which results in the inflammation/infection of the lungs.

Clemenceau center in Beirut gets JCI accreditation

The Clemenceau Medical Center in Beirut, Lebanon, has been awarded the official accreditation of the Joint Commission International. CMC is one of only two medical centers in Lebanon to hold JCI accreditation. Johns Hopkins Medicine International - the Baltimore, Maryland, USA-based international arm of Johns Hopkins Medicine - prepared CMC for the JCI accreditation review, conducting assessments and mock surveys on the ground and by videoconference.

Diabetes amputations on rise in Riyadh

The number of diabetes-linked amputations in the Saudi capital of Riyadh is rising sharply and beginning to occur amongst people at younger ages, Dr Abdulaziz al-Gannass, foot and ankle surgeon at the National Guard King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh, told AP. Some 90 people a month have a foot amputated due to the disease, he said, and amputations for diabetes are now the number two reason for admission to hospitals in the kingdom after trauma.

Merck to buy Schering-Plough

New Jersey-based drug makers Merck and Schering-Plough have announced plans to combine in a $41.1bn cash-and-stock deal. The agreement comes just six weeks after rivals Pfizer and Wyeth announced their union. The company will operate under the Merck name.

Virgin Health to move HQ to Qatar

The Virgin Health Bank, one of the youngest Virgin Group ventures, will move its global headquarters to Qatar and establish a stem-cell bank in partnership with Qatar Science and Technology Park (QSTP). Parents in Qatar will be able to have their new born babies' stem cells collected, processed and cryogenically stored. Stem cells are being used in treatments for 85 different medical conditions.

Qatar MoH to launch complaint scheme

The Ministry of Health will soon launch an initiative to respond to queries and act on complaints from the public on health related issues. The new project, 'Labbaya', will promote communication with the media as well as members of the public. A new link will also soon be made available at the Ministry website where people can post their queries and suggestions as well as complaints regarding the Ministry.

'Food diaries' to aid obesity study

Pupils at selected schools in Abu Dhabi will keep 'Food Diaries', writing down everything they eat and drink as part of a campaign to study the growing problem of childhood obesity, The National has reported. Around 160 boys and 160 girls will be the basis of a comprehensive dietary survey for three days. The pilot study will be carried out this spring in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, and will be extended across the emirate and then nationwide in the autumn.

UAE doctors caught issuing illegal sick notes

The Dubai Health Authority (DHA) has revoked the licences of three doctors who were caught issuing illegal and fake sick notes to government employees, reported The National. One of the doctors whose licence has been revoked issued 2,500 notes in one year. Patients are usually charged Dhs100 for each note.

UAE doctors warn of blood shortages

Doctors in the UAE warned yesterday that the country's hospitals may soon run short of blood supplies because of the rising population and the prevalence in the UAE of blood disorders, reported The National. Healthcare professionals said a significant increase in the number of donors was needed to keep up with demand. Last year, one per cent of the population donated blood, giving 86,000 units.

UAE to put graphic photos on cigarette packs

From September, tobacco products in the UAE will carry new labels that will include pictures of blackened lungs and a haemorrhage-impacted brain to warn about the hazards of smoking, reported Gulf News. The pictures, which were donated by the World Health Organisation (WHO), also appear on cigarette packs sold in the UK, Canada and Brazil.
