Oman stem cell storage open
- Cord stem cell storage services have been launched in Oman by Dutch company Cryo-Save in conjunction with Omani firm Mustafa Sultan Science and Industry Company. Couples who opt for the services will have part of the samples shipped to a laboratory in Dubai Biotechnology and Research Park in the UAE, while the rest will be stored in Belgium.

Under-20s cigarette ban
- People under the age of 20 will no longer be able to buy cigarettes in Dubai from June 1. The move marks World No Tobacco Day and is part of the emirate's initiative to combat smoking. As part of the ban under-20s will also be barred from designated smoking areas.

Abu Dhabi renovates clinics to cut wait time
- A number of primary healthcare centres in Abu Dhabi are being renovated to reduce patient waiting time, reported Gulf News. Shaikh Khalifa Medical City, managed by Cleveland Clinic, is temporarily closing its Roudha PHC for six months to increase the number of examination rooms and add new facilities and equipment. In addition, the emirate has already renovated Al Khaleej, Al Madina and Al Zafaranah PHC clinics.

Sharjah bans smoking
- The UAE emirate of Sharjah has announced a ban on smoking in public places that will begin on June 1, reported Khaleej Times. Violators of the ban will receive fines of Dhs1,000 ($272) for individuals and Dhs10,000 to Dhs20,000 for establishments like hotels and salons that allow smoking. Signboards will be placed in public areas where smoking is banned along with a phone number on which people can report a violation.

UAE may double cigarette prices
- Tobacco prices in the UAE could double every two years under a new proposal by the Ministry of Health to curb smoking rates, reported Gulf News. Dr Wedad Al Maidour, head of the UAE Tobacco Control Committee, is submitting a proposal to the Ministry of Economy to double current prices, which she said would reduce tobacco consumption, especially among teenagers. Cigarette prices in the UAE range from Dhs4 ($1.10) to Dhs7.

Broken alarm system blamed for hospital fire
- The alarm system in Ras Al Khaimah's Saqr Hospital was down when fire raged through the hospital's fifth floor on Monday morning, reported Gulf News. A top medical official in the UAE emirate said the matter had been repeatedly reported to the country's Ministry of Health, but there has been no response. No injuries or fatalities were reported in the incident, which occurred in the hospital's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. However, 115 patients were shifted to other hospitals.

'Dramatic' rise in demand for blood in UAE
- The demand for blood has shot up by 20% across the UAE and medical experts are urging the public to come forward to give donations, reported Gulf News. Describing the increase as 'dramatic', officials at Tawam Hospital in Al Ain said demand across the UAE is rising due to an increase in the number of trauma patients, cancer patients, more operations and techniques such as blood and plasma exchange.

Health agency to protect workers
- The Dubai Health Authority is working with the Municipality to introduce a series of laws to protect labourers on construction sites, according to a report by The National newspaper. The laws will provide access to unilateral basic healthcare to all workers in the emirate.
