  • Kuwait unveils insurance revenues

  • The Kuwait Ministry of Health has announced that revenues from heath insurance total over $485m. The figures have been calculated for the period between August 2006 and May 2008. In a statement the Ministry's financial controller said that plans to further develop insurance schemes and tighten control over revenues were underway.

  • Study to examine effects of shisha smoking

  • A joint American University of Beirut-Virginia Commonwealth University team has been awarded a $2.8m research grant from the US National Cancer Institute to study the exposure to toxicants as a result of shisha smoking. The study will examine the effects of smoking water pipe tobacco on the heart, lungs and cell biology in individual users by measuring their toxin exposure as well as the toxin content of water pipe tobacco smoke. The team will also study group water pipe tobacco smoking in cafés - examining the effects of sharing a water pipe on levels of toxin exposure and content. Finally, the team will compare toxin exposure and effects between water pipe tobacco smoking and cigarette smoking.

  • Cosmetic surgery for eyes in UAE

  • A cosmetic surgery procedure to rejuvenate and improve the appearance of the eyes has been introduced at Moorfields Eye Hospital Dubai, the Dubai branch of the 200-year old Moorfields Eye Hospital in London. The new treatment can improve the aesthetic appearance of a patient's eyes, using everything from Botox to fillers and wrinkle treatments, according to a statement. The cosmetic effect of the treatments may also be combined with a vision correction procedure.

  • Qatar's Al Khor hospital to expand

  • Qatar's Al Khor hospital is planning to expand due to a rising population and dramatic increase in the number of patients, reported Gulf Times. Officials said occupancy rates have increased from about 60% in the last few months to 85.5% presently. The expansion will include include a paediatric emergency centre, dialysis unit and a baby-friendly section as well as new clinics and services in the obstetrics/gynaecology, anaesthesia, diabetes, neurology and rheumatology departments.

  • Habtoor donates $5m for medical research

  • Khalaf Ahmed Al Habtoor, Chairman of Al Habtoor Group, has announced that he has contributed $5m to the Dubai Harvard Foundation for Medical Research to support its efforts to boost healthcare in the Arab world. The Foundation seeks to support biomedical research and academic programmes for the advancement of scientific knowledge and the creation of a medical community of regional leaders.

  • Dubai hospital construction completed

  • Construction work on the $200m Saudi German Hospital in Al Barsha, Dubai has been finished and it is on schedule to open next year officials have said. Developed by Emirates Healthcare Development, the company is now spending $40m on medical equipment and supplies. Once open, it will be the largest private healthcare company in the Mena region, employing about 1,500 people.
