  • New Medical Centre opens in Dubai

  • A new medical fitness centre has opened in Dubai that can accommodate up to 5,000 people. Dubai's largest medical facility, it is located in Al Muhaisnah. The Dhs25m centre has a capacity for 500 patients, a registration section with 13 counters, a radiography section with five modern digital machines, pathology section, a preventive medicine clinic, vaccination room and a residential facility with 60 rooms.

  • Medical centre to handle residency visas

  • A medical fitness certification centre will open in January that can process up to 5,000 residency applicants a day at its immigration department. Located in Sonapur in Dubai, other facilities at the centre will include vaccination rooms, isolation rooms for infectious diseases and a laboratory.

  • Qatar's Al-Ahli Hospital to expand

  • The Al-Ahli Hospital in Doha is to add up to 650 more beds, three new buildings and increase the number of staff. Abdulwahed Abdullah Al-Mawlawi, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Medicare Group and Al-Ahli Hospital said two buildings will be finished within the next two months and the third one by early 2010.

  • Extended hours for Abu Dhabi health centres

  • The Disease Prevention and Screening Centres in Abu Dhabi will now operate till 6pm daily from January 1. The DPSC, a subsidiary of Abu Dhabi Health Services Company, was introduced to streamline medical visa screening processes for the benefit and convenience of the expatriates residing in Abu Dhabi. The subsidiary operates through Ambulatory Healthcare Services.

  • Children's specialist hospital to open

  • A state-of-the-art children's hospital is set to open in 2010 in Dubai near Al Wasl road. Named after His Highness Sheikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum , Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the Al Jalila Bint Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Hospital will have dedicated medical facilities including cardiac surgery, oncology, organ transplant and nephrology.

  • UAE to review price of drugs

  • UAE prescription drug prices are to go under review by the country's health officials. A survey conducted by the Gulf News found prescription drug prices have risen by more than 5% in the last month. Prices for drugs are fixed by the Ministry of Health. Dr Ali Shakar, director-general at the ministry, said the increase in drug prices was due to the currency exchange rate.

  • Anti-smoking campaign in UAE

  • The UAE Ministry of Health has teamed up with Pfizer to provide training for counsellors working to help smokers quit the habit. The pharmaceutical giant has offered support to the government's anti-smoking initiatives by facilitating education and training and making its non-nicotine based anti-smoking drug available at local treatment centres.

  • Qatar bans PharmaCare drugs

  • Qatar National Health Authority has banned products made by UAE-based PharmaCare FZE and registration of the company was cancelled by the Qatar National Health Authority, Gulf News has cited reports from the Ministry of Health. The products were reported to contain impurities and the Ministry has banned the sale of Carelox, a drug produced by its plant in Jebel Ali.
