Saudi okays center for blood disease
- Saudi Arabia has approved a Human Rights Commission's (HRC) recommendation to establish centers across the kingdom for sufferers of blood diseases, reported Arab News. The HRC's third recommendation requiring marriage registrars not to wed couples at probable risk of producing unhealthy children was also approved.

Mideast medicines up 18% yearly
- According to IIR Middle East, the Middle East pharmaceutical market grows between 15 and 18% annually, cited Gulf News, due to increasing public and private investment in the sector. IIR is organizing the International Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology Exhibition in the region to cover key areas in drug discovery, clinical trials and manufacturing through to biologics, devices, global licensing and regulatory aspects.

Maternity hospital for Sharjah
- Sharjah is getting a Dhs350m independent maternity hospital. On the same site as Al Qasimi Hospital, it will have 200 beds and be ready next year. The hospital will include an obstetrics and a paediatric department, a gynaecology unit and an open heart surgery unit.

Fewer UAE nationals seek care abroad
- A UAE ministry of health official said many UAE nationals who used to travel abroad for medical treatment are now seeking the same in hospitals within the country, reported Khaleej Times. Assistant Undersecretary of the MoH for External Affairs and International Health, Nasir Khalifa Al Bodour, said major advancements in nearly all hospitals around the country in the past few years has created a fundamental change in the concept of providing health care. Where many cases used to be treated abroad, the shift has changed to within the country now, and with a high percentage of success, he said.

e-TQM offers health masters course
- e-Total Quality Management (e-TQM) College has launched a new masters programme for health care professionals to learn managerial skills, reported Gulf News. The Masters of Science in Public Health: Excellence in Health Care Management is offering health care professionals and fresh graduates with practical managerial skills. The programmed allows professionals to finish the course while pursuing full time jobs.

Healthy bones campaign launched
- Novartis Consumer Health has launched a campaign to promote awareness of osteoporosis, a 'silent crippler' that is still prevalent among women in the Middle East. Some 70% of post menopausal women in the UAE have low bone mass, and its Building Strong Bones Campaign aims to educate women on the problem and provide advice on preventative measures. It is offering free bone examinations, alternating weekly between Boots pharmacy at Mall of the Emirates and Deira City Centre as well as at selected Ministry of Health Clinics.

Oman to build $1bn healthcare city
- Oman's Majan Development Company has announced plans to develop a healthcare city near Muscat with an estimated investment of 300-400 million rials ($774m to $1.03bn), reported Reuters. A senior official of the Kuwait-based Gulf Investment House, which is initiating the project with a 20% stake, said a feasibility study for the project is underway. Oman's Ministry of Tourism has agreed to allot land of one million square metres near Blue City, which is 100 kilometres away from Muscat.

Oman's pharmaceutical market looks bright
- Oman's pharmaceutical market will grow in the short to medium term, supported by excellent healthcare facilities, which are continuing to receive attention from foreign investors, according to a report by Research and Markets. Prescription and patented drugs are expected to remain the dominant products within the overall market, at 97% and 92% of the total value, respectively. Their position will be retained by an affluent population, modernisation of healthcare facilities and the development of the private sector. On the other hand, cost-containment policies promoted by the government will encourage the development of the over-the-counter and generics sectors. The government is presently considering the introduction of a faster generics approval process for Indian-made products, which are increasingly present in the GCC.
