  • UAE healthcare sector set to grow

  • A new report by the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry says the UAE's healthcare sector is showing strong growth and is set to attract more foreign direct investments in the near future. The UAE is home to eight pharmaceutical factories with investments reaching $64.2m. Leading players in the pharmaceutical manufacturing business include Globalpharma, Gulf Inject and Medpharma, Neopharma, Pharmacare. With respect to hospitals, the number of hospital beds in Dubai is expected to nearly double last year's capacity, from 2,934 in 2007 to 5,415 in 2010, thanks to the establishment and expansion of nine hospitals in Dubai and nine more at Dubai Healthcare City, reported Gulf News.

  • UAE to launch nursing council

  • A new Nursing and Midwifery Council is to be set up early next year in the UAE under the chairpersonship of Princess Haya Bint Al Hussain, wife of Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. Princess Haya chaired a meeting recently to discuss the establishment of a UAE nursing and midwifery council. The meeting included a presentation on the findings and recommendations of the working group that met earlier this month to discuss the need to regulate nursing and midwifery education and practice in the UAE.

  • Egypt confirms 23rd bird flu death

  • Bird flu claimed another victim in Egypt on Monday, the Egyptian Mena news agency has reported. The 16-year-old girl, who died of bird flu in the village of Asyut, became the 23rd person to die from bird flu in Egypt since the first case was reported in the country in 2006. Salem contracted bird flu after exposure to infected household poultry in her house and was hospitalised on Saturday.

  • Dubai plans new health and safety rules

  • Dubai plans to issue new occupational health and safety standards soon, according to a senior ministry of labour official. Yousuf Abdul Gani, executive director for strategies and policies affairs, speaking on behalf on Saqr Gobash, Minister of Labour, said during the fourth edition of the International Risk Management conference, that the ministry is drafting new standards to create a healthy workplace environment which protects workers.

  • Makkah to have new hospital

  • A 500-bed specialist hospital is to be built in King Abdullah Medical City in Makkah. The specialist hospital will cost SR334m and another paediatric hospital will be constructed in the city at a cost of SR200m. The medical city's specialist hospital is set to start receiving patients by the second half of 2009, when the first phase is completed.

  • Pilgrims offered health checks

  • Special medical teams from the Saudi Health Affairs Management have been deployed at King Abdul Aziz International Airport to provide medical checks for pilgrims before their departure from the Kingdom. Most pilgrims catch flu and other infectious diseases after completing their Haj rituals. Medical teams will be able to provide suitable treatment to ensure the safety of pilgrims during their journey.

  • Bahrain doctors look to extend work life

  • Top government health service doctors are demanding the right to work until 65, instead the current compulsory retirement age of 55. Health workers are also calling for a better a pensions deal, saying that the short career span for consultants means they cannot achieve the maximum benefits paid to other government workers.

  • Kuwait Ministry asks for hospital purchase funds

  • The Kuwaiti Ministry of Health has asked the Cabinet for funds to help it buy six private hospitals. The move comes as the Ministry looks to increase capacity in public hospitals and increase the quality of healthcare offered according to daily Al-Jarida.
