UAE closes six clinics on safety fears
- The UAE's Ministry of Health has closed six medical clinics for using untrained staff as doctors and nurses and carrying out unsafe, unregulated treatments, reported The National. In one clinic, a secretary with no medical training had taken part in medical procedures.

UAE president rejects IVF law
- The President of the UAE has rejected a draft law on invitro-fertilisation because it is 'discriminatory', reported Gulf News. His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan said a clause which stipulates that at least one Muslim IVF specialist be appointed among the staff of every IVF centre across the country is 'discriminatory and contradictory to international conventions'. Shaikh Khalifa added that freezing embryos requires a fatwa or a religious edict, so the later use of eggs would be better than embryos.

Dubai Health Authority partners with Philips
- Dubai Health Authority and Royal Philips Electronics have signed an agreement under which Philips will be the preferred partner in future projects that will be deployed by the DHA. Under the terms of the partnership, Philips has become the DHA's preferred partner and supplier of healthcare, lighting and consumer products and services for healthcare projects in particular. The agreement includes the possibility of further deployment of Philips products and services.

Emaar to develop US hospitals
- The Emaar Healthcare Group has partnered with Methodist International in a multi-year agreement to develop hospitals and healthcare facilities in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region and Turkey.

AGU offers hospital management programme
- The Arabian Gulf University (AGU) has signed a contract with Paris 7 University to offer its Hospital Management and Healthcare Governance programme. Paris 7 will coordinate the programme to include selection of candidates and delivery of courses.

Emiratis donate more blood
- According to the Abu Dhabi Blood Bank, Emiratis comprise of 15.1% of all blood donors in the UAE, making them the largest group of donors in the country, reported Gulf News. The Abu Dhabi Blood Bank (ADBB) has reported collecting 10,000 units of blood and 300 units of Apheresis Platelets since the beginning of 2008.

Qatar launches biomedical research program
- A world-class biomedical research program, the first of its kind in the Middle East, has been launched by the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development and Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar. The program aims to form a bio-medical research infrastructure that will develop a scientific and technical workforce for the benefit of the region at large. To achieve its goal the program will bring together institutions that have overlapping missions in medical education, research and healthcare.

Overdue health clinic opens its doors
- A health clinic, which stood idle for three years after its completion, has finally opened to the general public in the UAE. The clinic in Qurrayah, a village between Fujairah and Khor Fakkan, was built to cater to the healthcare needs of local residents who were usually forced to travel to Fujairah nearly ten kilometers away. However, the community grew frustrated that the centre lay unused and were given no explanation for the delay. On Monday the clinic finally opened its doors to the general public and received eight cases, reported Gulf News.
