Kuwait to increase bed capacity
- The Kuwaiti Ministry of Health is to equip the hospitals of Farwaniya and Jahra with an extra 500 beds next month. The ministry has so far only achieved 20% of the total projects it intends to fully accomplish in three months. In addition, the Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah Hospital, currently under construction, will have a capacity of up to 1,168 beds and will be operational by 2011.

Qatar University to conduct research on bird flu
- A team from Qatar University has begun studies on bird flu to help international efforts aimed at curbing the outbreak of the disease. This was announced by Dr Siham Yusuf AlQaradawi, the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS). She said the college attaches immense significance to international developments regarding bird flu, especially HSN1 and its impact on the health of humans.

Call for more local heart research
- Dr Abdullah Shehab, Director of CME, Emirates Society of Cardiology, said ongoing cardiology research was essential in the GCC so that local traits and habits were taken into consideration. 'International research is important, but we need to know better our people's statuses. Private and public sectors should join forces to conduct more research. Heart-related ailments are too common in the region, and the commonality of diabetes and obesity are other influential factors,' he said.

Yemen to immunise 4m children
- Yemen has implemented a nationwide anti-polio campaign to immunise more than 4 million children under five years of age. The campaign, which is being conducted house to house, will be the last one as Yemen will be announced as a polio-free country by 2009, officials and organisers of the campaign said. The three-day campaign, which was funded and supported by the UNICEF and WHO, will be carried out by some 40,000 health workers, reported Gulf News.

Johns Hopkins to manage Abu Dhabi hospital
- The Corniche Hospital in Abu Dhabi, the only specialist maternity hospital in the UAE capital, has hired Johns Hopkins Medicine International of the US to manage the facility. This is the third hospital in Abu Dhabi to be affiliated with the Johns Hopkins group since 2006, joining Tawam Hospital in Al Ain and Al Rahba Hospital on the outskirts of Abu Dhabi.

New hospital wing opens in Muscat
- Al Nahdha Hospital in Oman has completed the expansion and renovation of various wings, clinics and sections, at a cost of OR1.5m. Opened in 1972, Al Nahdha is one of the oldest hospitals in the Sultanate, but the modernisation improvements aim to provide the most up-to-date medical facilities.

Conference on cancer and diabetes in Qatar
- A two-day symposium focusing on cancer and diabetes treatments begins on Sunday at the Sharq Village and Spa, Doha. The conference, BioQatar 2008, is organised by Qatar Foundation Research Division and Qatar Science and Technology Park (QSTP) to attract biomedical ventures in Qatar. The symposium aims at providing an understanding of Qatar's strategy, infrastructure and support for commercialising cancer and diabetes technologies.

German orthopaedic hospital to open in 2009
- A German Orthopaedic Hospital in Bahrain is expected to be operational during the first half of 2009. The hospital aims to offer first-class orthopaedic and rehabilitation medical services and will initially focus on surgical and conservative orthopaedics, sports medicine, internal medicine, radiology and pain therapy. The core medical team will be made up of German doctors and specialists in orthopaedics, surgery, anaesthesia and physiotherapy.
