- Studies on obese children have prompted cardiologists in the UAE to caution against over-prescribing statins to children as a 'quick fix'. Dr Najeeb Al Khaja, consultant cardiologist and secretary-general of the Shaikh Hamdan Medical Awards for Medical Sciences, said the focus should be on prevention and lifestyle changes before medication when dealing with children.

Free diabetes screenings in Oman
- To participate and celebrate World Diabetes Day on November 14, Welcare Diagnostic and Treatment Center will offer free monitoring of blood sugar to residents of Oman. The World Diabetes Day has been chosen by the World Health Organisation to alert the public of the pandemic of diabetes and related cardiovascular diseases. The number of people with diabetes around the world is predicted to double over the next 25 years, and this epidemic is set to contribute to an explosion of cardiovascular disease, as warned by the International Diabetes Federation.

Diabetes centre opens in UAE
- A diabetes education and monitoring centre dedicated to children and teens was opened in the UAE yesterday. The Juvenile Diabetes Education Centre, set up by the Emirates Diabetes Society and Johnson and Johnson Corporate Trust in Dubai Healthcare City, provides free information and support services for children with Type I diabetes between the ages of 4 and 18. The centre, the first of its kind in the UAE, was established to help tackle the nation's rising diabetes rate.

- The UAE plans to conduct a diabetes survey targeting children to discover how many and how young children are when they get the metabolic disorder. The country has the second worst prevalence rate globally, reported Gulf News.

Qatar to have health promotion board
- According to the National Health Authority (NHA), Qatar is planning to set up a health promotion board, based on the Singapore model. The objective of the board is to promote public health with the support and involvement of various sections of the society. A senior NHA official said they were seeking assistance from the Singapore board to set up a similar facility in Qatar.

Abu Dhabi GDP spend to rise
- Abu Dhabi's healthcare spend as a percentage of GDP is set to rise in the coming years, Zaid Al Siksek, CEO of the emirate's health authority told delegates at the MEED Abu Dhabi Conference: 'It is curently at around 4% to 5% of GDP , but I think we can look to see that increase up to 8% or 9%.'

Oman to hold medical international symposium
