  • UAE diabetics to receive new treatment

  • Two new types of medication which help to reduce appetite among obese diabetics and in some cases serve as a substitute for insulin have been recently introduced to the UAE. Up to 50 patients across the UAE have tried the new medicine exenatide and several hundred have used the Dipeptidyl Peptidase4 Inhibitor (DPP-4). Both treatments help increase the blood glucose and insulin secretion from the body.

  • Pregnant women urged to use 4D foetal scan

  • According to senior specialists only 30% to 40% of pregnant women are aware of the advantages of the four-dimensional ultrasound (4DUS), which is a new tool for observing the foetal face. The 4DUS allows doctors to observe the appearance and duration of a baby's facial movement and expression inside the uterus. Investigators have also started to analyse foetal behaviour as a measure of neurological maturation.

  • Overall satisfaction with Dubai healthcare services, survey finds

  • In a survey published at the recent Middle East Health Conference, 73% of all respondents said they were satisfied or very satisfied with the quality of healthcare in Dubai. The online survey was commissioned by PA Consulting Group to examine patients' views on the quality of healthcare in Dubai and involved nearly 500 people who live or work in Dubai and 400 patients who have visited a hospital or clinic in the past 2 years. The survey uncovered a difference between the views of Emiratis and Western Expats. Overall, 64% of Western Expats thought the private hospitals provided better healthcare than the government compared with only 43% of Emiratis.

  • UAE approves HIV drug sales

  • The UAE Ministry of Health has approved sales of eight anti-retroviral drugs. According to Gulf News the post-exposure prophylaxis drugs, which are only available by prescription, will reduce the chances of infection by approximately 79% if taken within 72 hours after exposure to HIV.

  • GCC spend to quadruple

  • US-based consulting firm McKinsey has said that healthcare spending in the GCC will quadruple to $60bn by 2025 from $15bn currently. Delegates at the MEED Middle East Healthcare conference were told that the UAE would face a particularly acute rise in costs due to its diabetes 'epidemic'.

  • Breast Cancer treatment now available in the UAE

  • Biotechnology companies NeoBiocon and Abraxis BioScience, have announced the launch of Abraxane in the UAE for the treatment of breast cancer. 'The launch of Abraxane in the UAE represents a major strategic step in our plan to provide safer and more effective cancer treatments,' said Patrick Soon-Shiong, MD, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Abraxis BioScience.

  • WHO to assist Qatar

  • Qatar has sought support from the World Health Organisation (WHO) to set up a 'multi-sectoral national committee' for greater co-ordination between the Ministry of Health and other ministries and government departments on issues of health. Dr Syed Jaffar Hussain at the WHO regional office for the East Mediterranean said that a WHO team is expected to visit Qatar early next year for further discussions.

  • Qatar shows highest diabetes rate

  • Qatar is leading the GCC region with the highest rate of Type I diabetes according to the Qatar 2006 World Health Survey. Dr Gail Fraser Chanpong, Director, Public Health Department National Health Authority (NHA) said the Qatar health survey shows that 12% of adults were diabetic and 10% were classified as pre-diabetic, only 30% had a healthy weight and 28% of children below five years were obese.
