Thuraya Africa strategy
Africa is a major focus for Thuraya's strategy, with the satellite operator successfully penetrated several major markets such as Algeria, Ethiopia and Angola. Abdulla Touhami, Marketing Manager, Thuraya, says the company is looking forward to introducing its next generation handsets in March 2006.

Thuraya's next-generation handsets have the sleek size and functionality of a regular multimedia mobile, combined with GSM, GPS and satellite connectivity. Adventures with satellite
British adventurer Mark Evans is canoeing the entire length of the coast of Oman to raise money for charity, as well as raise awareness of Oman's tourism potential. Fort Info Technology is the Middle East's largest distributor of Thuraya products and services. The company has offices in both Dubai and Tehran. With Thuraya due to expand its footprint with the addition of a third satellite later this year, Fort is looking to the Far Eastern market, and specifically the maritime industry.

Advanced solutions from Thuraya
Thuraya has a wide range of products available for customers, including a light-weight phone handset that includes GSM and satellite capabilities. Lack of power supply is also no longer a problem in remote areas, thanks to Thuraya's solar charger. Dr Mohamed Al Ghanim, Senior Manager Products Management, says the future trend is for convergence, with one terminal supporting all services from IT, voice and media.

Thuraya expands east and west
Thuraya is expanding its satellite network through Africa and the Far East. China is seen as a key market, with great need for better communications particularly in rural areas. Thuraya Chairman Mohammad Omran says there is also high demand in fishing and maritime industries.
