Al Majaz alerts subscribers

Qatar software company Al Majaz develops a wide range of applications from financial to human resources. Its Al Majaz Telecom Technology branch works with Q-Tel and Al Jazeera to provide mobile news alerts to subscribers around the region, via SMS. The service is expanding beyond Qatar to the UAE, Yemen and Jordan.

HP development initiatives

HP is running regional initiatives to encourage governments, NGOs, businesses and private citizens to come together and use technology to enhance social and economic development. For one project, HP partnered with Cisco, Microsoft and several Jordanian companies to bring e-learning to Jordanian schoolchildren.

Jordan Telecom looks ahead

Jordan Telecom will liberalise its fixed line network by the end of this year, the first Arab country to do so. It's hoped increased competition will help lower prices and make services such as broadband internet more accessible to Jordanians. Broadband is still in its infancy in Jordan, with only around four thousand customers. Laurent Mialet, CEO of Jordan Telecom, says the target is to have one line in six connected to ADSL by 2007.

Flying the Flag of the future

Oman is set to become the hub for the Middle East's first terabit cable system. Flag Telecom has signed a dual landing station agreement with Omantel. The new high capacity loop will stretch through important developing markets such as the subcontinent through to the Far East.

Qatargas telecom network

Qatargas supported the 6th Arab Telecom & Internet Forum, sharing their experience and technology. Qatargas has implemented 9km of fibre optic link in its network, and is also using its local network, OTN. Telecom Engineer Mohamed Al Dabhani describes the system, which is designed to have enough capacity for at least the next ten to twenty years.

Focus Iraq: Telcos

Senior Iraqi officials suggest that some of the US-imposed contracts will be reinvestigated for possible corruption once Iraq regains full sovereignty. Former Communications Minister Dr Haider Al Abadi says it will take an estimated US$1.7 billion dollars to rebuild Iraq's communications infrastructure, but only US$600-700 has been secured to date, far short of what is needed.

According to IDC, the market for Enterprise Content Management (ECM) will grow from US$2.8 billion in 2001 to over US$8.3 billion in 2006 worldwide, at an average annual rate of 24 per cent.
