Indian firm invests in Oman aluminium
- Bangalore-based Future Metals Private Ltd has partnered with the Oman Oil Company to establish an aluminium rod extrusion plant at the Sohar Industrial Estate. The plant will use the hot metal from Sohar Aluminium's newly operational $2.4bn smelter, reported Gulf News. Future Metals will have 70% stake, while the remaining 30% will be owned by Takamul Investment, a venture capital fund set up by Oman Oil Company.

Egypt wants Agrium plant moved
- The Egyptian parliament has recommended the relocation of Agrium Inc's $1.2bn fertiliser plant from its site in Egypt's Mediterranean city of Damietta, reported Bloomberg. Residents have feared pollution, prompting the parliament suggesting to move the factory to any other suitable industrial zone. Agrium is 60% owned by EAgrium joint venture, with Egyptian Natural Gas Co, other Egyptian partners and Arab Petroleum Investments Corp.

Qatar tenders for barley
- Eureopean traders said Qatar's state purchasing agency is tendering to buy 30,000 tonnes of feed barley, cited Reuters. There is no mention of shipping date but bidding had been closed and prices were in consideration. Tightening global grain supplies are cited as reasons for grain tenders recently in the Middle East. An Abu Dhabi mill has tendered in April while Oman plans wheat tender in July.

Concorde to build $43.5m sewage plant in UAE
- The Abu Dhabi Sewerage Services Company has awarded a Dhs160m ($43.5m) contract to Concorde Industries to design and build a sewage treatment plant for the largest planned labour accommodation facility in the UAE, reported Gulf News. The facility will treat waste water from the Construction Workers' Residential City, a planned Dhs418m labour compound in the Al Mafraq area of Abu Dhabi. Concorde is aiming to complete the plant in just 11 months.

Everest Metal sales up 58%
- UAE-based Everest Metal Industries, a manufacturer of cable management solutions, has reported record sales of Dhs10.7m ($2.9m) for the first quarter of 2008, an increase of 58% during the same period last year, the company said in a statement. EMI said it expects sales to grow by another 57% to Dhs12.5m for the second quarter of 2008 up from Dhs8m last year.

EMAL awards contract for cooling towers
- Emirates Aluminium (EMAL), established to construct the world's largest, single-site aluminium smelter, has awarded a $10m contract to Italian manufacturer, Societą per Impianti Generali for the supply of its cooling towers. EMAL's power plant will use SPIG's cooling tower technology to reduce the temperature of the water used during the energy production process and ensure that water is returned to the sea within a one degree Celsius temperature range. This is well within Abu Dhabi Environmental Agency guidelines which allow up to a five degree Celsius increase, according to a statement.

Hadeed's portfolio to hit Dhs1bn
- Hadeed Emirates, an Abu Dhabi-based holding company which specialises in the manufacture and supply of metallic building materials, plans to double its portfolio this year from Dhs500m ($136m) to Dhs1bn, reported Gulf News. The company's plans include building a steel factory at the Mussafah industrial area. The company's projects also include the cargo terminal at Jebel Ali's Dubai World and the largest press in the world at the Abu Dhabi Media City.

Amana wins Adnoc contract
- Amana Contracting and Steel Buildings has announced that it has won the Dh85m contract from the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc) to build the firm's new research centre at Takreer. The project will form part of the Petroleum Institute Campus, being developed by Adnoc at Sas Al Nakhl in Abu Dhabi, according to Gulf News.
