Sugar refinery at Industrial City
- A new sugar refinery is to be built at the Industrial City of Abu Dhabi, which will be able to process 600,000 tonnes a year, rising within five years to 850,000 tonnes. The UAE is already the world’s sixth largest producer of sugar and it wants to increase capacity to stave off price fluctuations. According to Gulf News, prices are expected to rise between 27% and 48% by 2011.

Agthia, Wild ink juice deal
- Emirates Foodstuff and Mineral Water Company PJSC (Agthia) has secured an agreement with the German-based Wild Group to exclusively manufacture and distribute Capri-Sun/Capri-Sonne fruit juice drink in the GCC, excluding Saudi Arabia. Agthia will commence manufacturing and distribution of Capri-Sun in Q1 of 2009.

Henkel Polybit installing largest parquet floor
- Henkel Polybit, a leading manufacturer of waterproofing products and allied construction chemicals, has announced that it is installing the world's largest parquet flooring for the world's tallest building, the Burj Dubai. The company's chairman said the total area of the flooring would be equivalent to covering 18 football pitches.

MBS nears completion of cargo terminal
- Mammut Building Systems, a manufacturer of pre-engineered steel buildings in the region and subsidiary of Emaar Industries & Investments, has announced that it is completing construction for Dubai World Central International Airport's Cargo Terminal in Jebel Ali. The deal has seen MBS, as subcontractor to the Arabtec/Max Bögl joint venture, design and construct a 22,668 square metre structure for the airport that will cater for 12 million tonnes of cargo.

Voltas wins Empower contract
- Voltas, an engineering and air-conditioning services provider, has received a Dhs260m ($71m) contract from Emirates Central Cooling Systems Corporation (Empower) for the construction of a cooling plant in the North District of Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC). Under the contract, Voltas will complete civil as well as mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) works in addition to the construction of a 66,000 refrigeration tonne (RT) district cooling plant. The project is expected to be completed in 15 months.

Fluor wins $2bn Kuwait contract
- Kuwait has awarded construction of part of a planned 615,000 barrels per day refinery to US engineering firm Fluor, reported the Middle East Economic Survey. The contract, which covers utilities and offsite facilities, is worth $2bn out of the projected total cost of around $15bn.

Sohar secures aluminium target
- Sohar Aluminium’s Carbon Department in March has ensured that the company’s target date of mid-June 2008 for its first hot metal production is achievable, reported Oman Daily Observer. This $2.4bn greenfield project expects to produce with a capacity of approximately 350,000 metric tonnes per year, a carbon anode plant, a metal casting facility, and a port facility for product storage and ship loading and unloading.

Scania sets up JAFZ facility
- Heavy transport manufacturer Scania is setting up an assembly plant at the Jebel Ali Free Zone. The industrial facility in Dubai will be built for bodyworking and equipping complete vehicles, adapted to the requirements and operating conditions in the region. The facility will have the capacity to customise about 1,400 vehicles per year.
