MSL names Hayek new MD
Manning Selvage and Lee has announced that Mazen Hayek is new MD of the Dubai regional office replacing Sheila Kaur, a major contributor to the firm's development since 2001. Ms. Kaur leaves to pursue other interests. Mr. Hayek is 34 and a Lebanese national with 12 years of experience in the region.
Ghossoub named IAA World President
Top Dubai media boss Joseph Ghossoub has been named World President Elect of the International Advertising Association's global umbrella organisation at a meeting in Beijing today. He will take office in 2006 after serving two years as IAA Senior Vice President, and was chosen unanimously to head the organisation by the 56-member World Board.
Swatch gathering in Dubai
Nearly 200 Swatch retailers, distributors and top management are in Dubai for the what is claimed to be the biggest watch event to be staged in the Middle East from September 7-9. The three-day Swatch corporate event is modelled on Baselworld held each year in Basel, Switzerland.
New MEED online project search
The Middle East Economic Digest has launched a new online service to track the progress of 1,000 projects worth more than USD50m in the Middle East. Subscriptions start from USD3,000, and users can recieve email alerts everytime there is major news about a project.
Newsboys annoy Ajman drivers
Motorists told Gulf News that they are annoyed by newsboys who roam between cars in Ajman. The practice was banned in Dubai a few years ago as unsuitable for a developed city. Motorists said that newspapers should be sold in kiosks and supermarkets and not on the street.
Iraq extends Al Jazeera ban
The Iraqi government has extended a ban on Al Jazeera imposed on August 5 over incitement to violence. A statement said that the Al Jazeera management had not responded to these allegations, and had continued to broadcast within Iraq and interview individuals in defiance of the ban which had closed its offices in Baghdad.
AUD team wins global ad contest
A student team from the American University in Dubai has won the world championship in the 2004 International Advertising Association InterAd competition. The team beat 26 other entries from universities around the globe to design an integrated communications campaign for the Florida Tourism Board, a first for the Mideast.
E-Vision, Rakbank, free TV
E-Vision has teamed up with Rakbank to offer free and discounted access to its cable television. New subscribers to the cable service paying with the bank's credit card automatically receive two months free access to E-Vision's basic package. Alternatively, using their Rakbank MasterCard or Visa credit card they can also select any E-Vision premium package and get the Dhs110 value of the two months credited to them.
Spinneys magazine hits AD, Oman
Spinneys shoppers in Abu Dhabi and Oman will now also get its free magazine, Living in the Gulf. This food, family, health, beauty, interiors and lifestyle magazine is already a familiar sight in Spinneys stores across Dubai and the Northern Emirates.
Airlines lead ad spending boom
The new and existing airlines of the Middle East are the fastest growing spenders on advertising and PR, reported agencies. The likes of Etihad Airways and Air Arabia are challenging the stalwarts Emirates and Gulf Air with media campaigns to match their aircraft purchases.
NBB sponsors GCC 2010 forum
The National Bank of Bahrain will participate as a gold sponsor of the Bahrain Economic Society's First Economic Conference entitled The GCC 2010, from Competition to Integration, which will be held on November 23-24 at the Diplomat Radisson Hotel. On the agenda will be a single currency for GCC countries and other issues related to monetary integration.
GMR, 5th annual marketing forum
Dubai is to host the 5th annual Gulf Marketing Forum entitled Innovation and Creativity in Marketing. There is an ongoing need to further cultivate standards and to think outside the box, said organiser Barry Gray, MD of Gray Business Communications. The forum runs from September 26-28 at the Jumeirah Beach Hotel.
Third Oman newspaper launch
The Oman Tribune is published for the first time today, the third English language newspaper in the Sultanate. Publisher is the owner of the Arabic daily Al Watan since 1971, Oman Establishment for Press, Printing and Distribution. Former Times of India senior editor Ajit Kumar Jha will head the editorial team.

Bates PanGulf, USD30m target
Bates PanGulf is targeting group revenues of USD30-35m by 2007 with public relations contributing USD10m, officials told a press conference yesterday. International advertising group WPP, which owns Burson-Marstellar, has a 40 per cent stake in Bates PanGulf.
