MSL names Hayek new MD

Manning Selvage and Lee has announced that Mazen Hayek is new MD of the Dubai regional office replacing Sheila Kaur, a major contributor to the firm's development since 2001. Ms. Kaur leaves to pursue other interests. Mr. Hayek is 34 and a Lebanese national with 12 years of experience in the region.

Ghossoub named IAA World President

Top Dubai media boss Joseph Ghossoub has been named World President Elect of the International Advertising Association's global umbrella organisation at a meeting in Beijing today. He will take office in 2006 after serving two years as IAA Senior Vice President, and was chosen unanimously to head the organisation by the 56-member World Board.

Swatch gathering in Dubai

Nearly 200 Swatch retailers, distributors and top management are in Dubai for the what is claimed to be the biggest watch event to be staged in the Middle East from September 7-9. The three-day Swatch corporate event is modelled on Baselworld held each year in Basel, Switzerland.

Newsboys annoy Ajman drivers

Motorists told Gulf News that they are annoyed by newsboys who roam between cars in Ajman. The practice was banned in Dubai a few years ago as unsuitable for a developed city. Motorists said that newspapers should be sold in kiosks and supermarkets and not on the street.

Iraq extends Al Jazeera ban

The Iraqi government has extended a ban on Al Jazeera imposed on August 5 over incitement to violence. A statement said that the Al Jazeera management had not responded to these allegations, and had continued to broadcast within Iraq and interview individuals in defiance of the ban which had closed its offices in Baghdad.

AUD team wins global ad contest

A student team from the American University in Dubai has won the world championship in the 2004 International Advertising Association InterAd competition. The team beat 26 other entries from universities around the globe to design an integrated communications campaign for the Florida Tourism Board, a first for the Mideast.

Bates PanGulf, USD30m target
