The Middle East Public Relations Association is preparing for a 30 per cent surge in membership in 2005 as it looks to increase its efforts to unite the regional PR industry, and open up career opportunities for young nationals. The biggest target growth markets in terms of membership include Saudi Arabia, Oman, Bahrain, Egypt and Iran.

The Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research is to hold its 10th annual conference on the theme Arab Media in the Information Age at the Beach Rotana Hotel in Abu Dhabi from January 9-11. Keynote speaker will be Dubai Crown Prince General Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

The US has designated Al Manar television - the mouthpiece of Lebanon's Hizbollah - a terrorist organisation, and ended its US satellite transmissions. Lebanon's ambassador called the designation unacceptable censorship. The US State Department ruling followed the French banning of Al Manar's after accusations that its programmes could incite hatred.
Standard Chartered Bank is to be the main sponsor of the Dubai Marathon 2005, adding the event to the bank's collection of race sponsorships around the globe. The Dubai event takes place on January 7 and entry forms can be picked up from any branch of the bank in the UAE.

A special radio programme on the upcoming elections is now being aired in Iraq. German broadcasting station Deutsche Welle told KUNA that this project is funded by Germany's foreign ministry and coordinated by Deutsche Welle. From yesterday the Iraqi journalists taking part in the project will be sending in reports from the ground daily to create a 30-minute programme of current information about the upcoming vote.
The Middle East Publishing Conference is being staged on January 17-18 by the Dubai Consultancy, Research and Media Centre in conjunction with the International Media Production Zone in Dubai and Dubai Media Incorporated through its Al-Bayan daily. Experts will share their vision and experience and run workshops for more than 300 delegates.

The Kuwait Cabinet has approved an order to create a shareholding company to establish a media and technology free zone. Local commentators said that Kuwait would like a bigger slice of the regional media scene following the success of Dubai and Qatar.
Dubai is the capital of the regional PR industry, Dubai Ports Authority's CEO Jamal Majid bin Thaniah told the International Public Relations Association conference in Dybai yesterday. He said greater transparency in the region is inevitable and firms here have to adapt to the new realities through PR.
