ITP has announced that Arabian Business magazine is to go weekly from January 7 in a major pitch against rival Motivate Publishing's Gulf Business which is currently still a monthly publication. Agencies welcomed the move, noting that business news goes out of date very fast in the Middle East these days.

7Days, the UAE's only free weekly newspaper, has announced its expansion into the daily market with the launch of its daily tabloid sized newspaper. Increased year-on-year circulation figures for international titles such as The Times and The Independent since changing their format from broadsheet to tabloid, proves that there is a growing preference among readers for more compact sized newspapers, said a spokesman.

CNBC Europe, the business and financial TV network, takes the channel on the road to Dubai from December 6-10. The week-long special features daily interviews with key representatives from the finance, tourism and leisure sectors. The UAE's weekly 7Days free tabloid newspaper is about to launch a daily edition. Journalists will be briefed on Sunday about the launch. This will be the first-ever free newspaper distributed in the UAE, with revenues generated entirely from advertising.

The 10 winners of the 2004 Ibda'a Media Student Awards were honoured yesterday at a ceremony in the Dubai Media City by Culture and Information Minister Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The judging panel shortlisted 44 entries from around the world. Internships with top media companies comprised the prizes, a foot-in-the-door to a media career.

Regional advertising expenditure surged from USD1.9bn to USD2.7bn in the first nine months of the year, according to PARC figures. Saudi Arabia spent USD472m followed by the UAE with USD473m, while Kuwait clocked USD268m, Bahrain USD80m, Qatar USD55m and Oman USD46m.

The success of Egyptian film Halet Hob, or State of Love, is sparking hope of a revival in the fortunes of Egypt's film industry. The film has already grossed USD250,000 since its opening two weeks ago. In its 1950s and 60s heyday, the Egyptian film industry was the world's third largest behind Hollywood and Bollywood.
Several controversial films will be screened to Arab audiences for the first time at the six-day Dubai Film Festival, opening December 6. Organisers hope the 75 films, which will be followed by seminars, will foster a debate on East-West relations. Debuting films include the documentary Control Room about Al Jazeera's coverage of the Iraq war, and British film The Hamburg Cell about the Al Qaeda cell behind the 9-11 attacks.

A new monthly English language publication jointly produced by Dubai's Reflex Publishing and the Regional Clean Seas Organisation, Offshore Arabia Magazine, claims a Pan-Arab readership of 10,000 industry experts. The first 40-page edition carries interviews with Prince Turki Bin Nasser Bin AbdulAziz, Saudi Arabia's President of Meteorology and former UAE Oil Minister Obeid bin Saif Al Nasseri.

Ajman based Channel 4 Radio Network has gone live with its first Arabic music radio station on 98.8 FM in Iraq. The UAE company is licenced to broadcast within a 100km radius of Baghdad to a population of 8m. Advertisers are already supporting us, said producers. Channel 4 is planning a rapid regional expansion.

Formerly a weekly publication, 7 Days offers a mix of news, sport, business and features. The BPA audit throws down the gauntlet to other UAE newspapers to also obtain internationally accredited circulation audits.
