Asian Games short of sponsors

The Asian Games to be held in Qatar late next year is failing to attract enough sponsorship, reported Arabian Business. MasterCard has rejected the chance to support the Doha games in 2006, and the only sponsorship so far is from state-owned Qatar Airways, Qatar National Bank and Q-Tel, aside from Swiss watchmaker Tissot.

Media women meet Manal

President of the Dubai Women's Club and the wife of UAE Minister of Presidential Affairs, Sheikha Manal bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum hosted a gathering of women from the media last week attended by female journalists. She noted that women play an important role at home as well.

On the buses, with ITP

ITP will start distributing its tourist title, called Visitor, to passengers taking tours with Dubai's Big Bus Company, run by Double Decker Bus Tours. The company runs 11 buses and conducts daily tours to Dubai's main tourist sites, including the Dubai Museum, Wild Wadi and Gold Souk.

DPC opens at DMC

The Dubai Press Club has inaugurated new premises at Dubai Media City, which it hopes increases dialogue between journalists and government officials. The club also plans to host visiting political and business personalities, as well as expand activities and events for members.

E-Vision Ramadan offer

Emirates Cable TV and Multimedia is offering a 60% discount on installation charges, a 50% discount on some premium packages and a Dhs100 gift voucher from City Centre mall in Dubai during Ramadan. E-Vision is a subsidiary of Etisalat and is the only cable TV provider in the UAE.

Oman grants private TV licences

Oman's Ministry of Information has awarded licences to Oman World Holding, allowing it to establish the first privately owned TV and radio stations in the country, reported the Times of Oman. It also granted licences to the production company Sabco to set up a radio station in Muscat, and another in the district of Zhafar.

Jeddah bans billboards

Saudi advertisers expect a surge in outdoor media costs after Jeddah Municipality's ban on billboards on rooftops and at malls and petrol stations. Under the new rules all billboards will be leased by bid at public auction. Bids will include site rent plus the advertising fees based on specified sizes.

Omnia, AD aviation jobs

Sharjah journalists acquitted

Two senior journalists have been acquitted in a long-running defamation case brought by the Sharjah Municipality, reported Gulf News. The case went to the Abu Dhabi Supreme Federal Court which quashed a lower court ruling and upheld the right to freedom of expression as enshrined in the UAE constitution.

PHD media planner to set-up

Media planner PHD is coming to the Middle East, reported Campaign Middle East. The agency will be based in Dubai and become a sister agency to OMD. Both are divisions of the Omnicom group. PHD is being etablished as a second string agency to OMD, and will be managed in Dubai by Elie Khouri, OMD regional MD.

The Dubai Press Club has announced a calendar of events for Ramadan at its new base in the Dubai Media City. The club will host a traditional Ramadan tent outside its premises and hold an open day for the media community and their families.

Al Jazeera signs Frost

Al Jazeera International has signed up Sir David Frost, the veteran British broadcaster, for its new channel which is due to launch next spring. Sir David will work from his permanent base in London though his exact role at Al Jazeera, the Qatar based media group, is not yet clear.
