The Madinat Jumeirah has been chosen as the venue for the Arab and World Media Conference which runs from December 5-6, and is organised jointly by the Dubai Press Club and Arab Thought Foundation. A galaxy of stars from the Arab media will attend and many prominent businessmen and politicians.

The first-pan Arab free-to-air channel targeting Arab children launched yesterday. The Al Jazeera Children's Channel is to broadcast educational and entertainment programmes 18 hours a day in Arabic. It is a joint venture between the Al Jazeera Satellite Channel and Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development.
The Middle East lacks a website like Google, which is visited by everyone, Starcom director Iad Abdel Khalek told Reuters in a report which highlighted the low level of Net advertising in the region. NetAdvantage estimates total Net ad spending will be only $10m in 2005 out of total Middle East advertising expenditure of $2.3bn.

Organisers of the Dubai International Film Festival 2005 have appointed PR firm Asda'a, advertising agency Lowe, and interactive agency Flip Media to help promote and run the event which takes place from 11-17 December. The week-long festival shows a wide selection of international and local films and documentaries.

The second Packaging and Graphic Design Awards for UAE tertiary students are being held in conjunction with Gulf Pack and Gulf Print 2005. The four graphic design categories include poster design, books and publications, typeface design and corporate identity. Organisers expect Gulf P&P 2005 to attract over 400 exhibitors and 6,000 trade professionals.

Qatar Airways is conducting a global advertising campaign across print, radio and television, focusing on the airline's hospitality and high standards of service. The airline is already running a series of three storyboard advertisements on CNN International and BBC World. It has also signed up a 12-month sponsorship deal with London-based Sky News.
Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal now owns 5.46% of voting shares in media group News Corporation, which replace the 3% stake in non-voting shares previously held by his investment company Kingdom Holding. In November 2004 Prince Alwaleed said he would buy more News Corp stock to support chairman Rupert Murdoch in the face of a possible hostile takeover bid by Liberty Media.

Saudi-based outdoor media company Attention Media has introduced its Megacom and Lamppost outdoor advertising into the Kingdom, according to Gulf Marketing Review magazine. The Megacom is backlit and 3x4 metres in size and the Lampost is a light box attached to the post covering a space of 1.3 metres. Media buying agencies for brands such as Toyota, Shell and Starcom are using the new equipment.

The launch date for the new tabloid newspaper from Dubai Radio Network is a closely guarded secret, but sources said it may only be two weeks away. The publication of a new daily rival to Gulf News and the Khaleej Times is one of the most keenly anticipated local media events.

UAE and Saudi investors are set to launch another business TV channel from the Dubai Media City, reported Al Bayan. The new channel has opened offices in other Arab cities and should start test transmissions this month. The start-up budget is $27m, and a $5m media campaign is planned in year one.
