BBC's Kate Adie to speak in UAE

Former BBC war correspondent Kate Adie is to speak about her career at the Grosvenor House in Dubai on December 17 and in The Club in Abu Dhabi on the 20th. Her 90-minute show will present her life and work reporting from many of the world's trouble spots.

CNN, Petra broadcast

CNN will broadcast live from inside Jordan's ancient city of Petra as part of its "Eye on the Middle East" week of programming to celebrate the station's 25th anniversary. CNN anchor Hala Gorani will co-host the special with Beirut's Jim Clancy on Friday 25 November.

Web offers freedom of speech

Censorship is still the main obstacle to freedom of speech in the Arab region, and the web and online journalism may offer more freedom and a much wider audience than newspapers or television, Indiana University Professor David Weaver told delegates at a conference on online journalism at Sharjah University. He told Gulf News that online media was more difficult for governments to control, and that helped more open communication.

AlJazeera reels at bomb plan

AlJazeera has been rocked by a news report alleging US President George Bush had planned to bomb the satellite channel's Doha-based headquarters. The UK-based Daily Mirror newspaper reported that according to a memo leaked by a Cabinet Office civil servant Bush planned to bomb AlJazeera's headquarters, but Prime Minister Tony Blair talked him out of it at a White House visit on 16 April 2005.

Zee Network, cultural evening

India's largest media and entertainment group, Zee Network, hosted a cross-cultural evening in Dubai to celebrate the newly-launched Zee Arabiya TV channel and to announce a $50m investment in its new Middle East headquarters at Zee Towers.

Tecom hires ex-Mirror editor

Former Daily Mirror editor Piers Morgan is now working for Tecom Investments to promote its new premier executive networking club, reported Arabian Business. Membership fees are being set at $3,000 a year in the hope of keeping the club at an exclusive, senior level.

UAE, MoI may be scrapped

Minister of Culture and Information Sheikh Abduallah bin Zayed Al Nahyan told Gulf News that rumours that the UAE Ministry of Information will be scrapped are speculation. He said this was also irrelevant as the ministry is playing a minimal role since the establishment of Emirates Media Incorporated.

OMG and PHD launch

Omnicom Media Group, the media services division of the world's largest marketing communications group, has been formed in the Middle East. This is linked to the second announcement, which is the launch of PHD in Dubai. PHD is the media network that OMG is rolling out globally, operating alongside and independently from OMD.

Bahrain college for journalists

The City of London is to estabish a new training institute for journalists in Bahrain next year with the same training as that available in the UK, reported Gulf News. The institute will offer a post-graduate diploma course as well as master's and PhD degrees in journalism.

Health awareness campaign

The Dubai Healthcare City has launched a week-long public awareness campaign focused on diabetes and heart disease. There is a TV and radio campaign and a big stand at the BurJuman Centre, plus a presentation at the Dubai Women's College.

Clooney film comes home

A movie that was partly shot in Dubai, called Syriana, will screen at UAE cinemas in December. Hundreds of UAE residents were caste in support roles for the film starring George Clooney and Matt Damon about CIA intrigue and the oil industry.

Journalist refreshers at DMC

Zayed University Media Centre is holding media training workshops for working journalists. Programmes are run in partnership with the Dubai Press Club and supported by the Dubai Chamber of Commerce & Industry. Registration is open for a two-day course on "Story Structure and Story Mapping", running from 23-24 November at Dubai Media City.

Emirates sponsors cup website

Emirates Airline has agreed to sponsor the official website of the 2006 FIFA World Cup which is hosted by Yahoo! FIFAworldcup.com is currently available in the four official FIFA languages - English, German, Spanish and French - and will be re-launched when the final draw for the event takes place on 9 December 2005.
