Oxford Business Group, AD guide

Oxford Business Group and Mubadala Development will jointly host the launching of the new in-depth business guide 'Emerging Abu Dhabi 2006'. Mideast ads to follow US online

The Middle East media lags development in the US by a couple of years, and will gradually move online, Publicis Groupe Media Chief Innovation Officer Rishad Tobaccowala told AME Info (see Executive Interview). He noted that three years ago the US had 2% of advertising online, while now it was 6-7% but that this still fell short of the 15% of time people now spend online.

Al Jazeera plans opinion polls

Qatar based news channel Al Jazeera intends to set up a research centre to conduct opinion polls, reported The Peninsula. Chairman Sheikh Hamad bin Thamer Al Thani said the news channel now ranked fifth among international channels in terms of reach and extensive coverage.

Flip Media, Catch online tie-up

Flip Media, the interactive marketing agency has announced a strategic arrangement with Catch Interactive, formerly known as 121 Agencies. Both firms are based at Dubai Media City, and each agency will retain independent creative studios. But they will share their resources, respective knowledge pools, expertise and technologies in interactive products and platforms, tracking systems and relationship marketing management and metrics.

Bahrains closes offensive websites

A statement from Bahrain's Ministry of Information said it had closed several Internet sites that promoted pornography or insulted Islam. The sites were in Arabic, making them easily accessible to Internet surfers, it added, without naming the websites.

Yemen attacking journalists

Yemeni government officials were yesterday accused on inciting attacks on journalists by the Yemeni Journalists Syndicate, reported Gulf News from Sanaa. Earlier this week two journalists were beaten up and detained for four hours by the police.

KSA cinemas back for Eid

Thirty years after cinemas were banned in Saudi Arabia, the big screen is making a modest comeback this Eid holiday with the screening of children's cartoons, reported Reuters. Religious scholars hold that any dispiction of the human form is forbidden in Islam and see the US dominated film industry as immoral; moderate muslims think otherwise and point to the widespread availability of satellite TV.

The twice monthly magazine is published by Gulf International Publications Company, part of Hilal Corporate Communications. Al Arabiya cameraman beaten

A cameraman from the Al Arabiya TV station was beaten up by police while filming a sit-in by textile workers at a factory in Sanna, reported AFP. He was detained for several hours before being released and suffered three broken ribs and a bruised leg. The station deplored what it called a hostile mobilisation towards journalists in Yemen.
