Gulf News revamps business

Gulf News is in the process of upgrading its business coverage and has appointed English journalist Mark Johnston as Business Editor. The paper is now more proactive in its search for stories and aims to sharpen reporting standards which had come under some criticism.

Dar Assayad, two new mags

Before the end of the month Lebanon's Dar Assayad publishing house will launch Sahar, an Arabic-language title for GCC women, reported Campaign Middle East. This launch will be followed by a finance magazine next year which will track local stock markets and real estate.

Oman's The Week, BPA audit

The Week has become the first Omani publication to apply for an audit, from BPA Worldwide, reported Campaign Middle East. The free magazine is published on Wednesdays by Apex Press and Publishing. It claims a print run of 51,000 copies and provides local news coverage, business, entertainment and sport.

Leo Burnett changes job titles

Some 200 Leo Burnett employees across the Middle East and North Africa region are receiving new job titles to mirror a shift to total integrated communication consulting. Titles that used to be 'account' executive or 'account' director, for example, will now be 'communication' executive and 'communication' director. This impacts brand agencies Leo Burnett and Black Pencil, interactive and CRM agency Arc MENA and Manning Selvage & Lee public relations.

Police chief on obscene TV

Dubai Police chief Lieutenant General Dahi Khalfan Tamim yesterday expressed his regret over people who worked for obscene TV channels and called on them to stop trading in women's bodies to make money. His remarks were reported in Gulf News after he received a delegation from Dubai University College.

Dentsu chief at IAAW

The CEO of Japan-based advertising conglomerate Dentsu, Taeo Mataki, will speak at the International Advertising Association World Congress in Dubai next year, the first time he has spoken publicly outside of his native Japan, according to Campaign Middle East. Dentsu, which dominates Japan's domestic advertising market, recently agreed to a joint venture with Saudi firm Drive Communication.

BrandMoxie, charity adverts

Abu Dhabi-based advertising agency BrandMoxie has introduced a scheme called AdCare: Heal the World, through which it offers complimentary design services to charity organisations active in relief work. IAA festival in Dubai

The UAE chapter of the International Advertising Association will hold a regional advertising festival next year in Dubai, following an agreement with the International Advertising Festival, organisers of the Cannes Lions in France. The three-day event, which will include awards for excellence in advertising, will be held in November 2006.

Arabian Business editor suspended

The editor of Arabian Business, Stuart Qualtrough, has been suspended following an incident of alleged plagiarism, according to a statement from Dubai-based publishers ITP. Qualtrough had replaced former editor Anil Bhoyrul, who stepped down after complaints over the magazine's Desert Diary column.

BBC goes after Al Jazeera

The BBC is starting up an Arabic TV and information service under the BBC World Service banner. It is scrapping services in 10 other languages to help pay for the venture. The service is expected to go live in 2007 and compete with Al Jazeera, which is itself launching an English-language service next year.

Car Magazine goes Middle East

ITP Consumer Publishing is launching a Middle East edition of the international motoring journal Car Magazine in November. The launch issue will have previews of the new S-Class Mercedes-Benz, the up-coming Middle East Motor Show, and a preview of the UAE Desert Challenge.

Amex, ATM deal

American Express has secured a three-year sponsorship deal with Arabian Travel Market, the Middle East's premier travel and tourism trade event. Amex has branding rights both on and off-site, and will have a dedicated lounge at ATM capable of hosting 100 people. Card holders will have free access to the exhibition.

Radisson SAS appoints Action

Radisson SAS Hotel at Dubai Media City, part of the Brussels-based Rezidor SAS hospitality group, has appointed Action Global Communications as its public relations agency for the property. The hotel, the first to open in DMC, will have 246 rooms including five suites, three restaurants and four bars, 10 meeting rooms, and a wellness centre.

Saudi TV, Pakistan appeal

A Saudi TV appeal has raised $32m to assist survivors of Pakistan's massive earthquake, said the Saudi Press Agency. Donations to the state-run campaign will continue for another week. King Abdullah gave $2.8m and Crown Prince Sultan $1.3m to the appeal. Earlier this month King Abdullah said the Kingdom was sending $133m to aid reconstruction after the earthquake.
