European internet users now spend more time online than reading newspapers and magazines, according to Jupiter research quoted on VNUnet. Europeans spend an average of four hours a week online, up from two hours in 2003. Just three hours are spent reading papers and magazines. Broadband is seen as the key driver of increased internet usage.
Al Jazeera International has revealed its full line up of correspondents ahead of its global launch later in 2006. The 24-hour English language satellite channel has four broadcast centres - Doha, Kuala Lumpur, London and Washington DC - and around 20 supporting bureaux. Al Jazeera, the Arabic channel, will also support operations from its own bureaux.
The publishers of Bahrain-based Gulf Daily News are launching a daily business newspaper, ITP reported Recruitment ads for editors have been placed in regional publications. Gulf Daily News' editor-in-chief George Williams says the paper is likely to launch early 2007, with many shortlisted candidates from Britain and the UAE.
The Lagoon Bahrain is to target investors throughout the Gulf in a wide ranging advertising campaign. Potential purchasers in Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and the UAE will see and hear television, radio and newspaper adverts with new images, footage and details of the project.
The Dubai Sports Channel and the Al Tayer Group have penned a sponsorship agreement for the 18th edition of the Gulf Cup. The Al Tayer Group will become the main sponsor for a variety of programming produced by DSCH both prior to and during the competition which takes place in the UAE from January 17 until February 2. The Dubai Sports Channel is the official host broadcaster of the event.

SAE Dubai has teamed up with the Emirates Diving Association to produce the Clean Up Arabia 2006 official documentary. The main Clean Up Arabia event is scheduled for November 11 in Fujeirah. Selected SAE students will produce a documentary including the shooting of underwater footage and various interviews; once complete, the documentary will be sent to broadcasters and will also be used as promotional material.

The first issue of the new, revamped Seef Spotlight magazine is out now, featuring the amenities and developments at Bahrain's Seef Mall. The quarterly publication, available for free, also gives visitors information about the mall's ongoing west wing expansion. A cameraman with Lebanese news channel Al Manar was injured yesterday during violent protests in Beirut against the demolition of illegal housing, according to agency reports. Clashes between rioters and police left a teenage boy dead and sixteen others injured. The protestors blocked a main road to the airport and had burned tyres, fired guns and thrown stones at security forces.
An animation series created by a UAE national has become a major hit on Dubai's Sama TV, reported Gulf News. Freej features four veiled grandmothers and is set in a traditional Dubai neighbourhood with a backdrop of the Dubai skyline. The series, which airs daily at 6.45pm, has attracted strong interest from other networks including Zee TV and Star World; English subtitles are planned to be added in the future.

Al Jazeera International, the soon to be launched English language news channel, has announced that BBC news presenter Darren Jordon is the latest recruit to its team. Jordan, who joined the BBC in 1998 and had become one of its main primetime presenters, will be based at Al Jazeera's headquarters in Doha.
Emirates airline is reviewing its direct marketing arrangements in the UK, according to DM Bulletin. It wants an agency to handle all aspects of direct marketing, including CRM and database management, the report said. The airline's advertising in the UK is split between Leagas Delaney and Grey London.

The UAE is setting up a new federal body to curb fraudulent medical-related advertisements, according to the Khaleej Times. It will be operational within two months. A senior Ministry of Health official says some advertisements were posing grave health hazards to the public. Penalties of up to Dhs400 can be imposed on ads that don't comply with ministry guidelines.

Bahrain-based science and technology company PVAXX has signed a three-year sponsorship agreement with reigning F1 world champions Renault, according to Gulf Daily News. The eight-figure deal, the value of which was not disclosed, was brokered by KHP Consulting, which has offices in Bahrain.
