The Oxford Business Group is partnering with the Qatar National Bank to produce Emerging Qatar 2006. This is the third consecutive year the QNB and OBG have worked together on the publication and it is set for release next month. Emerging Qatar 2006 will be an English language review of Qatar and subscribers will be able to receive regular updates from the OBG's online briefings.
The Arab Media Group has signed an advertising deal with the Alaqariya Media Group, the parent company of Alaqariya TV, the real estate and tourism channel, reported the Khaleej Times. The tie-up will provide Alaqariya with advertising space across AMG's different media including newspapers, magazines and radio stations.

US based ArabMedicare.com is to launch a consumer health and fitness web site and newspaper aimed at the Dubai market called Dubai Health and News. The publication will serve as both a tabloid size newspaper and a web site covering more than 25 health topics. The hard copy of the publication should be available in Q1 2007, while the web site can be found at www.dubaihealthnews.com

The Omnicom Media Group is to open a planning/buying agency dedicated to digital media. The new unit will have 14 staff and will be headed by Dimitri Metaxas, previously the Media Director at Impact Proximity's iMedia for four years. The agency's service offering includes Internet display advertising, search engine marketing, database, viral and mobile marketing and advergaming, among other specialist services.

The UAE's newspapers are under threat from Internet based news sources and are not doing enough to enhance their own web content according to an expert cited by Gulf News. Duri Al Ajrami, the MD of Dubai based Igency, said that much of the country's print media was showing little enthusiasm for developing online services. Print media readership in western nations is expected to drop by 25% within 20 years.

A group of Jordanian businessmen has launched a new Arab satellite channel, Decision Makers, in Dubai Media City, according to the Jordan Times. Its focus will be on business and economic issues, said chairman Saleem Sayegh. Operational costs have so far reached $15m.

Jordan has joined with the University of Southern California to set up the Red Sea Institute of Cinematic Arts, which will be located in Aqaba. The institute, a collaboration between the Royal Film Commission of Jordan and USC's School of Cinema-Television, will offer a three-year Masters of Fine Arts through courses in cinema, television and a screen-based media.
Bahrain is setting up a training institute for journalists, PR people and other media professionals, according to Gulf daily News It will offer a postgraduate course and a Masters in Journalism, associated with City University, London. The centre is expected to open in autumn 2007.
The Pearl-Qatar has signed on Singapore-based marketing and advertising firm Batey to promote the project around the world. The brief includes securing advertising spots for the development on television. Batey has previously acted for clients such as Singapore Airlines and the Singapore Tourism Board.
Gulf News is claiming to be the UAE's top-selling English language newspaper after announcing audited Sunday-Thursday circulation figures of an average 91,985 between January and March 2006. The audit was carried out by BPA Worldwide. Obaid Al Tayer, MD of Gulf News' parent company Al Nisr Publishing, criticised other newspapers for publishing unreliable circulation figures.

Al Jazeera International, the 24 hour English language news channel, is to have its African bureaux in Cairo, Abidjan, Nairobi, Johannesburg and Harare; it will also share the resources of the Al Jazeera Arabic news channel. The channel has appointed Amr El-Kahky as its Cairo correspondent, while Gabi Menezes and Haru Mutasa will work in Abidjan and Nairobi respecively. They join Farai Sevenzo in Harare and Kalay Maistry in Johannesburg.
Al Arabiya, the 24 hour Arabic language news channel, has appointed Mazen Hayek to the position of Director, Marketing and Business Development. Prior to joining Al Arabiya, Hayek was Managing Director of Manning Selvage and Lee Public Relations. Hayek will work on streamlining the channel's marketing and communications activities, with the aim of strengthening relationships with business partners and stakeholders.

Hana Advertising says it has started a website, thedubaiguide.com, which will promote Dubai to business and leisure travellers. The site is designed to serve as a web portal for Dubai-based companies, and gives links to Dubai-related international websites and e-portals of Dubai and UAE government departments.

Universal Music is threatening to sue YouTube and MySpace over copyright violations, according to MacWorld. Universal says the sites owe it tens of millions of dollars in royalties, for user-uploaded music videos. Universal says it will take legal action by the end of the month if current talks fail.
