Etihad Airways has signed a three-year sponsorship deal with English rugby club Harlequins. Under the terms of the contract, Etihad gets naming rights on shirts and will have its logo placed on the roof of Harlequins' Twickenham Stoop stadium in south west London. Financial terms were not disclosed. It is the airline's first major sports sponsorship in the UK.

A Saudi businessman has won a libel case in the UK against publisher Cambridge University Press for a book that alleged he supported and funded terrorism, Gulf News reports. Sheikh Khalid bin Mahfouz had brought the action after the release of the book Alms for Jihad. CUP issued a statement saying the allegations made in the book were 'wholly untrue and unjustified'. The publisher has agreed to pay damages.

The Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority is to launch its first hotel classification guide book in August. The initiative follows a workshop held recently by the Classification Department of the ADTA, which was attended by the management of 46 hotels in the capital. The ADTA is also exploring a possible future e-link with the city's hotels.

The World Gold Council and Dubai based jeweller Damas have launched a new Farfasha-Generation Gold TV commercial featuring Lebanese pop star Nancy Ajram, reported TradeArabia. The commercial is now airing on pan Arab TV channels and was produced by Signature Productions. Ajram is now in her second year as the Farfasha-Generation Gold Youth Brand Ambassador.

Dubai Summer Surprises is planning to expand the presence of its trademark character Modhesh by tying up a series of branding agreements. Marmoum already produces Modhesh trademarked juices but plans are in place to introduce Modhesh cakes, potato chips and dates in the near future. DSS also plans to market Modhesh accessories all year round at various malls in the emirate.

Bahrain's Mofakro Group has won a deal to operate indoor digital billboards at Seef Mall. It will allow companies to air TV advertisements and moving images in strategically located high footfall areas in the mall, Mofakro said. The contract will be carried out by Mofakro's Core Activities Group.
Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation could know by early next week whether its $5bn bid for Dow Jones has been accepted, Reuters reported. The Bancroft family, which owns 64% of voting shares in Dow Jones, is currently considering the takeover bid. The Dow Jones board has already endorsed the sale.
Etisalat is offering SMS breaking news from Asia through its Weyak service. News will be sourced from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal and the Philippines. Updates will be posted five to six times a day. News from Kerala in Malayalam can be downloaded using GPRS connections.

Hill & Knowlton has signed a public relations and marketing contract with Qatar's Starlink, a retailer of telecommunications and media entertainment products. Established in 2006, Starlink has a contract to sell Qtel products and services and install Showtime satellite packages. Hill & Knowlton is part of the WPP Group.
Television advertising rates in the Gulf are higher than anywhere else in the region, according to an Arab Advisers Group report, cited by Gulf News. Peak rates average $1,536 in Gulf countries, marginally higher than $1,533 in the Levant. The rate is based on a 30 second time slot. Saudi Arabia, Lebanon and the UAE have the highest average terrestrial TV advertising rates, all of which lie above the regional average of $766, the report said.
Al Nawda, a Mecca based Arabic daily, has been given a personal hand-out from King Abdullah, totalling around $2.7m, reported the Arab News. The paper has been undergoing severe financial constraints and it has been unable to pay staff salaries for the past three months. Culture and information Minister Iyad Madani confirmed the payment to the Saudi Press Agency.
The Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry has launched the Dubai Commercial Directory 2007-2008, the 19th edition of the publication. The title lists the details of more than 75,000 firms registered at the chamber and carrying out business in the city. The directory also contains an overview of Dubai's economy as well as the services provided by the DCCI.

The Harris Corporation, an international communications and IT company, is undertaking an upgrade project at MBC, the Dubai based Pan-Arab, free-to-air multi-channel satellite broadcaster. Harris has installed its Broadcast Master airtime sales and scheduling system and H-Class ADC playout automation system at MBC. The project involves an expansion of the existing Harris solution which supports MBC's tapeless workflow from content intake through programme production and on-air playout.
